British number plates

The other aspect is the rarity; as Dave says, you can't just make them up...but this means that is has to have been registered.

In the old days, plates were issued with each town having unique letters..so RM (my initials) was apparently some obscure scottish town with few cars. Thus 911 RM was probably the 911th car registered there...as you can imagine, there's a finite number of 911 xx plates...as each town would have only issued one plate with the number 911. More recently, the system has changed from

A123ABC to AB05ABC

The previous A123ABC would have just one number (I own, for exaample M3 MUG which used to be on my M3). The new system is not able to be shortened, so has less value. Shorter plates are more valuable.

it all boils down to supply and demand.

Mud??? I can relate so incredibly well to this scenario growing up in the north of England, but rest assured that they NEVER, ever spewed mud - it was always much worse substance I had to scrape of the inside of my wheel wells!!

Rob,

That would depend on whether you were attempting to show "997" (in which case you would be correct) or "9" "9" "7" - in which case HE was correct.
