Question Exhaust leak sound

Wife's '91 C2 recently began to make a noise from left side of engine that sounds like an exhaust leak. It reminds me of the old days when the muffler would rust out. A visual exam with engine off did not reveal any holes in the system. When at idle I cannot locate the source of the noise, but can definately hear the sound.

Before I start tearing anything apart, does anyone have any experience of similar "leaks" and is there a way to locate the source of the leak?

Hiya Jerry Garwick
Do you have a stethoscope ?

If you don't , a hose in the ear test will do .

The gaskets in our car's exhaust system are big metal pieces. Only the Cat has a "normal" flat metal gasket. With time/rust/etc sometimes the clamp, or gasket break. Follow Indycam recomendation to narrow down where the leak is...

Start your car and then put something thick and non-flammable (it will get really hot within about 3 seconds so be careful)against the tail pipe, completely blocking it. If there is a leak you'll hear it right away.

Here is the follow up on the exhaust leak. After removing the heat shields around the cat I could feel the exhaust leak around the flange and tube of the front end of the cat. When I removed the cat I found that the tube part of the cat completely disconnected from the flange. I welded it back in place and after much cursing and breaking several bolts, managed to get the flanges to seal. Problem solved. But I was very surprised to find the flange disconnected in the first place. This would have an expensive problem if I had taken it to a Porsche shop. I think they would have sold me a new cat.

The closest I got to this was when all the baffles in the secondary muffler cam loose. Sounded like a leak, but wasn't.
