Exclamation Upgrade Project (Part 3)

I have today spoken to JZ Machtech who confirm that the GHL exhaust has been somewhat painful to fit - like try a whole day. Apparently, the only way it would fit was to remove all the heat-shields around the engine. This obviously saves some weight but what are the implications of this long term? Why did GHL not mention this before? After all, the heat-shields were all off anyway for the service. JZM replaced them all and had to take them back off again after attempting to fit the GHL system. This cost me an extra 4 hours of labour.

The car will now not be ready until tomorrow, I think JZM will spend the rest of today adding up my bill so far.....sounds like it could be a whole day at £49.35 per hour just to fit the exhaust. Bugger. Sounds about the same price as a flight to Arizona to discuss this with GHL in person.... Additionally, it seems that when the exhaust is loosely bolted together on the car, everything is fine. When they tighten it up it seems that it 'pulls apart' slightly causing one side to blow slightly. JZM will use sealant to cure this but say the exhaust could do with being 2-3 mm longer on one side...On a positive note, apparently the system sounds good.

Joking aside, I expected some problems and I have got them. I have asked GHL to call me to discuss this - hopefully their input will be useful.

It also seems that the front RS sway bar will not fit on my car. Gert is investigating this at the moment. In the meantime, does anyone have RS anti-roll bars (the 24mm one) installed in the UK on a C2? If so, was there any problem with install?

It interferes with the brake servo apparently - could this be a RHD issue?

Additionally, it seems that the GHL system weighs a shade over 20kgs - so there is around a 40+lbs weight saving as JZ Machtech weighed the old system at around 42kgs.

John, it does.

Christer, lets hope it will all settle back in nicely after a few runs and heat cycles. Sorry to hear about your problems, but as you say, they were expected.

Lets have some pics when the car is finished!

Thanks for the support. Gert and I are a little stumped as to why the front sway bar will not fit. I have emailed Bill Gregory as I know he has one on his car (albeit LHD). So I guess we wait.
The puzzling thing is that one sees these 'RS' sway bars for sale here in the UK but I have never heard of any problems. Just thought of something, I'll ask Gert to check the part no of the swaybar used on the few RHD RS's that were produced. Perhaps we will find something there...?

Is it a pinstripe conflict??.....

There was a set of RS sway bars for sale on the forum last week. Maybe check with the guy for his part numbers.

JZ Machtech have confirmed that the GHL exhaust has yielded 23RWHP and a similar gain in torque. They will give me dyno sheets tonight. I think I am still in shock.

BTW, does anyone know whether the US 964's have a different rear bumper - i.e. fatter or protruding lower? If so, it would seem to explain why the GHL exhaust tip does not flush with the aperture at the back. So basically what I am saying is that it is a f**king good exhaust but it sounds as if it looks a bit silly....

That's a big gain, well done and thanks for 'telling the story' as it's happened.

So, 207 HP + 23 =230 HP. So, my guesstimate of 227 RWHP wasn't too far off!!

Do I win set of RS sway bars for the closest guess??

why, what are you going to do with them?

Piers, the pictures are at webshots

And the gains may have been higher with a 'strong' engine. Mine is clearly wheezing a little bit.
