Post Piers' 'Quiet Friday Discussion Forum'

£40K to £45K will get me a LHD 993RS or LHD 993 Turbo. Which should I go for, and why?!?!

All opinions gratefully received.

Hopefully I will be test driving one of each this weekend <img border="0" alt="[jumper]" title="" src="graemlins/jumper.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />

Recently I have read a fair amount about the 993RS, not sure why but at present everyone seems to be going RS crazy. Personally I'd go for the RS due to the fact that it is supposed to be more of a drivers car.

I suppose it might come down to what you want to use it for. If the RS is short on creature comforts you might not want it as a daily driver but if you are only going to use it as a toy this might not be an issue.

Who knows, you might drive both and have a clear preference, either way it sounds like you have an enjoyable weekend ahead of you, just hope the weather holds.

Enjoy

I would definitely go for the turbo - I'm not an RS man at all. I like the creature comforts too much (at the risk of getting flamed, I found this months 911 & P World quite dull!). Turbo would give all the comforts of a "normal" car plus lots of power / excellent handling. Mind you - if I was spending £45K I think I'd try to reach £50K and buy RHD.

I'd go for the RS.

Piers, - the ultimate 911! The final driver's version of the air-cooled legend!

Piers,

What about buying a 964RS & a 964 Turbo. If you go for LHD, you could just about have both within your budget!

Otherwise, go for the RS! If you want creature comforts, buy a limo!!

But you'll have to move quick...I think he is almost finalised on his 996 GT3 and will pretty much be letting the RS go within the next couple of weeks...

You would possibly end up with a RHD 993RS for little more than the LHD 993RS you are looking at.

Its a no brainer for me! The 993 RS for sure.

Reasons why:
- rarer and more exclusive than the Turbo
- lighter and more special (in the sense that they are seam welded, have thinner windows etc)
- less to go wrong than the Turbo
- 3.8 engine should be nice
- aren't the brakes and suspension better (ie, more purposeful)
- probably smaller depreciation (look at values of 930s vs original 2.7 RS)
- since it will be mainly a weekend car, you don't need all the 'comforts' of the Turbo
- the Turbo has a big ugly spolier, the RS a small ugly one!
- if you really like the widebody look get a C4s with the 3.8 engine

If you are going to RIDE it -&gt; get the turbo.
If you going DRIVE it -&gt; get the RS.

As most 993RSs(not the Club sport) have AC, stereo I do not think the loss of creature comforts is that great.

I knew my comment would be popular....

If "driving experience" is the thing and creature comforts are for limos (bit harsh I thought!) - why haven't you all sold your nice dry coupes and bought something like a westfield?

I have been in discussions with Leslie who is very honest. My concern is the crash the PO had. Not too serious but it could make it difficult for me to sell in the future.

I would have thought a 2cv owner would be well aware of the merits of 'adding lightness'...
...and the RS monicker is sooo cool, but do you have firmly fitting fillings?
Have a great weekend, you lucky b*st*rd

I think either would be great. On the assumption that it will be a "second" car (i.e. not a daily driver) then history would suggest that the RS will have longer "cor" factor which, together with rarity for original RS's, should translate into it holding its value better. Just my 2c, and as Johnny says "enjoy the weekend'

Regards
