Lightbulb Fire extinguisher mount

After seeing the results of fuel and/or oil hoses coming lose, I figured it was time to add a fire extinguisher to my 964. As I haven't seen the mounting solution we arrived at anywhere else, I decided to make a little webpage about it, with some pictures

Cheers,

JW

JW,

I am thinking of mounting one on mine. What type of fire extinguisher do us use? I saw the BC rating but can't tell if it's power type or halon type.

I just put in a halon type... Stay away from BC type... They are corrosive and will add a lot of money to your repair costs if you need to use it. I posted pictures of mine... Mounted in front of the driver's seat... It's an easy reach. I used a Brey-Krause seat mount. It limits the forward movement but I use my seat all the way back... So it doesn't matter to me.

The extinguisher is a powder extinguisher. It says "1kg ABC-powder" on it, and "8A 34B C". Dunno what it means, really
I bought it out of a motor sports catalog

Is there any safety concern if the extinguisher get too hot in the summertime? Inside the car, it can get to 120+ Farenheit here in Texas.

I wouldn't want to have the extinguisher blow up on me.

Nice write up JW, been wondering if I should do this, and yours makes sense.

Halon is banned here in the uk except for special refils, Powder is the probably the best bet, but boy does it make a mess.....

2 KG min size.
I got caught once, managed to put it out (just) burned hands though. Blow back, and fuel slopped about on the intake in the Mustang. Now carry a FULL size powder in the 'Stang all the time (2 Kg in the P car). Within reach from the drivers seat!, no good having it in the trunk! "Once bitten twice etc, etc".

Operating temperature range on my extinguisher is from -30 to +60 Celsius. That's -22 to +140 Fahrenheit

I would expect that it needs to get quite a bit hotter before it blows up, though Then again, I'm no expert in the field of fire extinguishers

Thanks

I figured that while having a bigger fire extinguisher would be better, a 1kg powder unit mounted in a good position is a hell of a lot better than nothing at all

I use a 2.5 lb. Halonite (or whatever the current Halon replacement is called) attached to a B-K Extinguisher Mount on the passenger side. I'll try to post a picture tomorrow. I had it in my 944S2 and just moved it to the 964.

Great website and write up.....I have my fire extinguisher conveniently at hand.....under the bonnet in the luggage compartment! Suppose I'd better neglect my wife and kids for another Sunday to fabricate a mount like yours.

It's high time I updated the site though..

Anyway, my fire extinguisher used to live in the luggage compartment too.
Fabricating a mount like mine shouldn't take too long, if you have some bits of metal, a welder, a drill, and something to polish it up

Apart from the fact that I don't have the required tool, I do know that there's no way I could have put it together so quickly. Not to mention that this one looks quite professional. And it was cheap too.

Cheers,

JW

Here's a shot of the one I just installed...

I just swapped it around so that the handle doesn't reach for your pant when exiting... I trashed a pair of jeans the other day. If you don't need to adjust your drivers seat I think this is the way to go. It's very easy to grab if needed. I like the mount also... Just pull a pin and it pops off in your hand!

By the way... I think that Halotron (Halon substitute) is available and legal in the UK. You could check into that...
