the interval page just lost me completely. Change it every 3500 miles.

Hmm - it looks like Mobil1 will last 18,000 miles (if the engine uses oil and is topped up regularly). Even without this top-up factor, Mobil 1 lasts an easy 10,000 miles...

And it would appear more important to change the filter than to change the oil.

The Mobil guys I spoke to assured us that 18k is easily achievable, with viscosity being the maintained at a damn high level even after 00's of hours running, they were quite proud of thier oils.......but less enamoured when I questioned the reduction in packaging sizes and keeping their prices static........ ;-))

kevin

They also suggested a 964 which leaks a bit could cope with 15w50 without any issues......for us Europeans anyway.

I wish Costco would stock the right grade for our 964s...

It will take me close to 3 years to do 18K. I've heard it should be changed once a year regardless of mileage. True? If so I guess I'll have to drive a lot more to get my $'s worth on the Mobil 1.

It isn't the oil breaking down that is the issue. Modern engine oils, especially synthetics can run a long time. The issue becomes the contaminants that enter the oil from ring blowby, general wearing of the engine that are the problem. This is why the engine oil comes out dark. I'd recommend a much shorter interval for the above reasons.

Can anyone recomend an oil for a recently re built engine? for when the running in oil is replaced?

I would like to use a good synthetic and probably mobil as its readily available in case I need to top it up.

can I put the super syn 0W-40mobil 1 in? or the super syn 15W-50 motorsport

I put 15w50 in mine a month ago with no problems.

Marc

ps. Why just Europeans? Do North American 964's leak differently or just leak more?

Chris... Yes... Once per year regardless of mileage. For those of us that don't use our P-Cars as daily drivers we need to worry about water contamination from the lack of daily running. The daily drivers get their oil hot on a regular basis, burning off the water that accumulates... We don't usually.

The service technician at my OPC recommended motorsport-style 15w50 as a good grade to use on my C4 daily driver, which has 122,000 km (75,000 miles) on the clock.

He said that engines of this age are also less prone to leaks with 15w50.

Hi Pesty,
an excellent product for your car in a Porsche Approved & recommended viscosity is either of;

Delvac 1 5w-40 or,
M1 5w-40 T&SUV

Both of these high performance synthetic oils tolerate long periods of inactivity very well and far exceed the minimum High Temperature High Shear viscosity mandated by Porsche. They will easily last the recommended 20k kms(12k miles) or 12 months OCI

M1 5w/15w-50 is the only Porsche Approved SAE50 grade oil - using a more viscous (thicker) oil than is really needed is counterproductive (via heat and flow) and never more so than in turbocharged engines of any sort

Porsche recommend (retrospectively to 1973) either a 5w-40 or 0w-40 viscosity ACEA A3/B3 quality rated Group 3 synthetic as a minimum for engine lubricants in all engine types

Regards

Castrol Syntec 5W-50 was on Porsche's approved list in recent years, is it now omitted?
