Sick and tired!!!
I am really getting tired of the bad rap of my 1990 964. It has over 120K on the clock but is well sorted out. Does it leak oil? Sure, but I would imagine most 911's prior to the 964 have the same "oil drip" problem.
It has more power, is more balanced, has a usable ac and is just a superior car in most ways over its predecessor. Plus I always hear about its looks, well in my opinion, it is pretty much the same as an earlier Carrera except it has more aerodynamic bumpers which I think looks more modern. However, it is still without a doubt, a classic 911.
Any 964 that is still on the road will more than likely have all "problems" sorted out. So when I hear people give advice to stay away from early 964's due to this or that, unless you have personally experienced these so called "problems" first hand, shut the f%*#!k up!
Anyone else fed up with the bad rap?

I agree with your sentiments. Classic 911 shape, with more modern technology. My dad is the original owner of a 93 C2. Dynamite car. When and IF he ever decides to sell it, I already have first dibbs.

I think the best thing we, as 964 owner's, can do, is to educate people when they make false statements about the 964 model line. If you see a post somewhere that is giving out negative info on the 964, politely correct the poster and give some proof of why their statement is false.
If someone you are talking to has a negative attitude about 964's, do the same and educate them on why their notion about the "Ugly Duckling 911" is false.
Of course, looks are subjective, so if someone feels that the 964 is ugly, there isn't much we can do...

FYI, I read all my information about the pitfalls of 964s in Excellence magazine when they publish the "Market Updates" section.
Write them and tell them to "shut the f*ck up" for starters. I think they have toned down a little since the last market update as I remember probably because some of the crap they said caused some backlash amoungst the Porsche community.
The British mags. don't seem to spread any of these things though. (Porsche, 911 World, for example)

I agree Excellence is a culprit in the bad reputation of our 964's. Maybe we should do a joint email to the editor of Excellence. I think several thousand emails in his inbox will get attention.

Yes, its unfortunate. The guides tell prospective buyers what to look for, and often that turns people off to the car all together. This is common though...they still talk about 911sc's with rubber centered exploding clutches that mostly went in the first 10K miles, and should be replaced and chain tensioners that can go unless updated. Well, obviously by now pretty much all (99.9% I bet)of these cars have been updated- it has been 20+ years for any 911sc on the road! In addition, there is always the talk of the hot running cylinder stud-pulling 1974-1977 2.7 litre motors.
Anyway, I agree you should counter when people point these things out that they have been corrected, or in the case of something small, each car has its quirks- even the new ones! Who wants an interor that has more cheap looking plastic inside than a pontiac? Well, that's what Porsches have now! Who wants a speedometer that is useless because it only goes half way up- without looking down and squinting, you can't tell the difference between 40 mph and 80 mph!
To each his (or her) own. I love the 964's looks, and in my mind its the last of the "true" 911's with the classic shape! Still love the late 80's carreras, but I wanted the improved performance, safety, drivablility etc of just a liitle more engineering content- the 964 is the perfect balance between classic Porsche sports car with just enough modern touches!

I have a 993 as well and I think the 993 and 964 are two great cars. They are very different and I prefer the 993 but as someone who has experience with both, I would never slam the 964.

I had a 1990-C4 targa a few P-cars back and really enjoyed it. I had it about 3 years and only spent about 1K on fixes. To add it was a daily driver in the Northern part of Ohio.
Great car, no major problems and enjoyed every minute of it.

I can see the frustration that you all have- just grab a look at PJC's comments- and he even admits he hasn't owned one. It is a pity that he should comment on a car so negatively if he has no first hand knowledge- how is he adding value to the thread?

Maybe several small negative points in a sea of glowing reviews should concern me more, but I just take them with a grain of salt.
My feeling is that most of the minor issues mentioned are a result of the high expectations that people have of a Porsche 911. The 964 is just another example in a long history of the glorious product line.
My car has 106,000 miles on it, and runs like a clock. No runs, no drips, no errors. Of course something is going to break sooner or later, but that's to be expected - for ANY car. Pointing out the most likely failure areas isn't necessarily slandering the car.
And issues like aesthetics? Purely subjective! It shares the identical lines of previous generations, and no one complains about their looks. The 964 is probably a victim of being the older sibling to the 993, which many (but not all) would say is the best looking Porsche to date. Someone can call my car ugly all they want - who cares! I think it's beautiful!
And if anyone's negative feelings about 964's affect resale value, I could care less. I'm not going to sell mine unless I can find a car I like better....
And I don't think they make one!

RSAEric, simply stated, but I think you have expressed what many of us unusually loyal Porsche owners feel. Sure, there are posers amongst us, however, Porsche owners are generally appreciative of automotive refinement without concern for what others think.

i really afraid to purchase my first 911 (964 cab) after reading the problems listed in Excellence. however, i went with my gut feeling and feel like i got a great, desirable car. she maybe a '90 with 121k, but still runs like a bat out of hell, eats corners like they are nothing, and has no leaks whatsoever!
i keep her spit polished clean so her black shine shows to everyone how great porsche engineering is!
peace out guys.
as far as i am concerned an SC, 964, or 993 is all i would own. my 944 is not even in the same class as its big brother.
take care
