What would you drive if you didn't have a Porsche
OK, let's say you were made to sell your 964 and had to buy another sports car (not a Porsche) for similar money?
These are my immediate thoughts:
MG TF160 - great fun, superb handling and cheap to run
Caterham 7 - an all-time favourite, have to be green and yellow just like in The Prisoner (how sad am I?)
Mini Cooper S - a real blast but I fear it will lose all credibility when the Americans finish desecrating The Italian Job...

Hmm...
A Caterham 7 would be nice but probably won't be that good in a crash - I'd rather save up the extra cash & go for a Radical!! An Elise would be OK for a while or perhaps a TT.

Oh, it must be Friday again...
Depends what you mean by similar money...I also have a 1989 BMW E30 M3 (which I am supposed to have sold to finance the 964). Cost me a lot less that the 964. Great to drive, lots of fun and all at reasonable speeds.
I've also had a 1996 BMW E36 M3 Evolution. Also great fun, but at 964 speeds. Available for 964 money.
Lotus Elise 111S would also be on my list - not quite the build quality of a 964 though!

For similar money - I'd probably go for a Toyota Supra TT. Had one before - great fun, very quick. Depreciate fairly alarmingly though.
Wouldn't mind a Lotus Esprit - I know they are a bit dated these days but I do think they look lovely. Heard they are not terribly reliable though.

Dave - agree with the Esprit, S1 would be my choice.
I'd also add to my list:
Lancia Integrale
Audo Quattro (original UR version)
Alfa Romeo SZ (1.4 lateral G ability)
VW Golf GTi Mk1 or 2
Escort RS Cosworth/Sierra Cosworth (if you could find an unmolested one)
But WHY would I want anything other than a 964?

Yay its Friday!
Caterham 7 Fireblade - 11000rpm, sequential shift 0-60 in 3.5 secs and only 375kgs - Fantastic car.
I had a Lotus Elise 111S prior to the C4 and quite honestly the C4 beats in in just about every way. I found the 111s a real headache and got really sick of getting into the car in the morning and sitting in a cold pool of water. But they do look great.
TT - very nice car - but a poor cousin to the 964.

This is a really good question. (Not 'What's a bus?' - the other one).
I've owned a lot of sports cars over the years, but I've kept the 964 so long (9 years) because, with a bit of tweaking, it just suits me so well.
I can't imagine not having it. It just does everything asked of it so well. As Paula's MS has worsened, it has had to cope with carrying walking frame, wheelchair, luggage, etc. It's also a very easy car to get in and out of. All this it does whilst still delivering a fantastic drive. Last year, we even did the Nurburgring whilst loaded up with all that stuff!
Blimey - were else could I find something that could do all that, look so good and be good enough for me fall in love with it?

Here are some of the cars I might consider if there was no Porsche cars in the world!
I have not put any importance on price(except not more than my RS), only MY desire to have the car and their "expected" driving thrill.
BMW E30 M3
BMW Z3 MCoupe
Ferrari 348
Lancia Integrale
Subaru Impreza GT/WRX
Honda NSX
Mazda RX7

Hmmmmm, good one.
I'm thinking a modified Scooby-Doo WRX or a nice used Viper GTS??
One you wear a ballcap in...the other your GOLD chains! <img border="0" alt="[hiha]" title="" src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" />
Seriously, the "big spender" types like the Vipers in my area...kinda funny how they pull up to the clubs in their "***** Extension". <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
...but that still doesn't mean I wouldn't want one!
Although...a nicely prepped E36 would certainly do! <img border="0" alt="[icon501]" title="" src="graemlins/icon501.gif" />

Some interesting replies here. The reason I asked the question (apart from it being Friday, of course) was that I really can't think of any car that would really replace the 964 and give me the same pleasure and satisfaction. It's a strangely addictive car. I don't even really yearn after a newer 911 (well, maybe a GT3...).
There are plenty of cars I'd have in ADDITION to the 964, but not instead of. In that vein, I'm seriously thinking of getting an MG ZT190 to run as a family car, to replace a very dull and embarrassing (cough) Nissan Primera.

Firstly, Phil, well done for 'coming out' about the Primera. It must have taken alot of courage <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> .
To answer your qu.,I can't shake my hankering for a Trevor.
I think the TVR Tuscan is a total knock-out, that styling (interior especially), those cans!!
<a href="http://www.b-link.co.uk/talkingtvr/gallery/tuscanpage01.htm" target="_blank">http://www.b-link.co.uk/talkingtvr/gallery/tuscanpage01.htm</a>
I hear they are starting at £25k in the classifieds, for the softer non-S, non red-rose spec.
I reckon if you were careful, it shouldnt be THAT unreliable, should it? The wow factor would hopefully make up for any glitches, and hell, its all British!!
It is my current alternative to my long term plans for a 964RS...dream dream
