Post Front Chin Spoiler

If I put a RSA Tail on my '93, will I need some sort of a chin spoiler to counteract any downforces generated? I have heard and read about being careful when working with adding fins wehre there was none before. If so are there any good suggestions out there?
Thanks,
Steve

First of all, this is a highly controversial subject...as you may very well know.

I look at it this way - Porsche produced the RSA without a chin spoiler...every single one of them, were there 378?

Anyway, as I have a couple of buddies with these vehicles, and have driven one of them - there doesn't seem to be any high speed issues regarding the lack of a front chin spoiler...and both of them have track time with their RSA.

In December, I upgraded to a one-piece RSA tail from MA Shaw, at the same time I also added an MA Shaw front spoiler, I wanted this very much due to the fact that I attend several track events a year, and was looking for more downforce...also my car was just too damned easy to load on the trailer without one!!!

I must admit the other half of the desire to implement these upgrades were asthetic...so it's a toss-up between the two when asked why I made this change/upgrade.

Overall, I like the look AND the feel of my 964 with a tail and front spoiler.

As I have had a few requests since my last reply, here is a pic of the additions made to my 964 in December:

The rear tail is a one-piece RSA style MA Shaw design, it bolts right in place of the "pop-up" rear spoiler with NO modifications to the deck lid whatsoever...all you do is "pop-out" the "pop-up" spoiler (c'mon, that was funny ) and bolt in the new tail, even using the original bolts that held in your electric spoiler!!

The front spoiler is actually "sandwiched" between the black plastic vent/guards for your oil cooler and AC condensor...a nice snug install.

Again, I like both the improvements in handling AND looks...remember, to each his own.

Very nice picture Jeff!
I like the wheels and the clear indicator lenses too.
Are you wheels 16" or 17"? They look like 17".
Anyway, congradulations on a seriously cool car.
I'm sure it not only handles and looks good but sounds as sweet as Pavarotti at about 4000 rpm.

Jeff -

Does it really provide some additional downforce? If so, that would be great as I still find the 964 a bit light on the front - especially at higher speed.

Like the wheels too! Are those original Porsche? I'm also looking for either the ones that you have or the Cup2 - haven't decided yet.

The originals would not be a problem to get a hold of - but a bit stiff in price. The replica's are bit more troublesome here in Holland. I'm looking at 17" (Mille Miglia) but found that the ET values for the rear wheels (I think 55) are not the same as those on the original 16" Cup 1 I have now, which have the same ET values for front & rear (ET 52.3).

Jeff:
Posting this question for my old man. Did you get the front chin spoiler from MA Shaw? How much did it cost? My dad has a 93 964. At VIR running the long course, the front end gets a little light heading up the hill after the bridge and on the back straight. He is looking to add a tail (probably 3.8) and something on the front.

Thanks,
Mark

I have OEM Boxter S wheels 17". They also have a 55mm offset at the rear but they fit fine.

Stay away from the Mille Miglia though, they weigh more than the standard items! Unless you like it that like that...

Hmmmmmm...

I think I'm gonna put a front splitter on mine too!!!
The car would look wicked with a front splitter, it already has cross drilled and a roll bar inside..hehehe

Okay, I'll try and answer everything in order:

Yes, the front splitter helps, quite a bit, while I notice it at VIR on the Uphill Esses and the South Straight, I really noticed it at Summit Point, when braking before the right hander down into the Chute...my car used to "wobble" like crazy in that braking zone as the pavement is a little "off kilter" - much better now.

YES, the front splitter/spoiler is from MA Shaw, cost was about $300 to put in on my doorstep, maybe less. Tail was $475 with shipping.

Those are Factory ORIGINAL Boxster "S" wheels, of the 17" variety, fronts are 7" x 17" (55mm offset) and rears are 8.5" x 17" (50mm offset) - they fit perfectly! Some people use the 9" on the rear, but then come back to say they need a 3mm spacer to provide good clearance to the inner fenderwell and oil line on the right side. I use a 3mm spacer on the front as I don't have the proper bump stops installed as of yet.

Mark, I see you everywhere! Especially at VIR and Potomac events...I will see you this coming weekend at Summit, NO? Look me up. FYI, TRG has a really nice "bow plane" style front spoiler they sell for around $400 plus shipping, I almost picked one up at the Club Race @Road America last August, but decided I had way too much stuff to carry back to Va. - then there was the $$$$ issue, as I had been away from home for a month, attending every event I could "worm" my way into! Also, I think the front spoiler I have has a bit more ground clearance - which is good, as I drive it on the street regularly.

EVERYONE, thanks a bunch for the compliments, I have had some adverse comments on my "improvements" or lack thereof - but then you know what they say, "opinions are like a_______, we all have one"!!

Look for this view at various track events on the Eastern Seaboard and beyond! Just kidding, relax.

Thumbs up

Jeff,
Nice look, I think the front lip completes the look of the car, I've been looking for one of these since I saw a 964 trouncing the pack at a PIR (Phoeinx) race. Thanks for the lead, I'm ordering one tomorrow!

With a stock RSA tail on a 964, splitters are not needed, but would help reduce understeer. A 3.8 RS tail makes a big difference, but you must have splitters or you will understeer. I run a fiberglass 3.8 RS tail/deck lid on my RSA with factory RSR splitters and the car is very stable (BTW, it weights 20 lbs less then the stock RSA tail/deck lid). I have a set of new never installed carbon fiber RSR MA Shaw splitters for sale. They are the same shape as my factory ones on my RSA, look at the top 3 shoots and the last shoot of my car at rsamerica.net. http://www.rsamerica.net/gallery/davidk_of_nj.htm

Hey guys,
love this thread and voted you all with 5 (highest rating). Keep it up. Thinking about putting those spoilers on my 91 C2.

Nice ride David! Love the shots taken at the Glen, I have several of me and my SC at various points of interest on track...it's been a few years since I've been there.

One question, notice you have a Magbra on the front. Is that a strip of black tape I see going up the center of the two halves that stick to the hood? Also, do you have any problem with the "headlight wings" flying off?

The reason I ask is that I have just purchased a Magbra and am currently prepping the car for a 3 day event at Summit this weekend and have pondered taping down the forward edges of the Magbra.

Let me know your take on this.

Thanks!

Interestingly mine has a front splitter which was on the car when I bought it.

As the car is currently being completely re-built after my brief but expensive journey through a fence, when I have a new bumper fitted I am not bothering with the spitter.

To my eyes the RS looks better completely standard as it left the factory.

but Jeff..........nice looking car!!!!

Thanks to all for the good comments on wings and chin spoilers. Nice photos Jeff! Just a comment on the magbra... I have one and love it. Never needed to tape down the front if it. It sticks well.
Thanks again,
Steve
