Post Spare on front

I never had occasion to use an inflatable spare tire on my SC, but I noticed that the owners manual for my 964 says that ""the spare wheel may only be fitted at the front". The manual for my SC had no such language.

Both manuals say to go slow and limit the distance. That much seems quite obvious. It would also seem prudent to stop every little while to check to make sure the spare is not overheating.

Here's the problem: my 964 (RSA) has big brakes at the front and the spare will not go over the calipers. I wonder what dreadful thing (other than a lighning bolt from Zuffenhausen) might happen to me if I were to run the car for a few miles with the inflatable on the rear...

As you said, one of the potential issues is overheating, I would imagine. The 964 is quite heavier than it's predecessors, especially in the rear, and the exhaust is right up next to the tire on each side.

Truthfully, I'm sure you would be okay at a reduced speed for a short amount of time, just to get you home.

...but don't quote me on that!

That's about what I had in mind.

As a side note, when I I had the pre-purchase inspection done for my SC many years ago, I had the spare checked to make sure it would hold air. The mechanic, who had been working on Porsches for years, said that he had never ever seen an inflatable spare with air in it.

I thought the prohibition was on using the spare on a drive wheel, since it's a different diameter.

Personally, if I have a flat or other problem requiring the use of the 'bicycle rim' in the front, I am calling the breakdown services to be towed!

I have driven using the spare, rightly or wrongly, on the rear, and it got me home, roughly an hour trip. Worked fine.

I think there would have been a huge yellow warning-sticker on the spare tire if Porsche didn't recommend it, and it's not. Just drive carefully.

The owner's manual states the spare wheel should only be fitted to the front. If a rear is flat you should put the good front tire on the rear and the spare on the on the front. Porsche version of a Chinese fire drill.
