Jean-Pierre,
The 993 RS is using the same rack as the 964? Have a look here Ahrens They seem to have very decent prices but still expensive compared to the USA. Getting your parts from there without paying taxes is the way to go

Kris,

Thank you for the link.. didn't know this one.

FWIW, the 993 RS has the steerng rack as per the 964 RS.

Two types of racks were made for 964 RS: powered and unpowered.

The 993 RS used the powered one as did the 993 GT2.

Goede weekend

Does anyone know how much weight I could save by replacing the power steering system with the 964 RS one?

Monique,
Have you tried driving around in a 964 or 993 with a manual rack? If you haven't you should give it a try before you buy another power rack, IMHO it definitely changes the road feeling and for the better. Its makes the car feel more tossable(?) like the early 911s. Everytime I've driven a C2 with a power steering it feels like a school bus compared to my RSA. The other benefit is/was its around half the cost.

What does the conversion entail? Can it be a self-done job?

It is not only the weight saving ( about 10 KG ,with Pump and Fluid) but since you delete the beltdriven Pump you add about 5-7 HP .
I have one in my Speedster and it is a very nice up/downgrade .
The Euro RS always has the manual Rack , the 993 RS has a modified 964
Power Rack .
A good used PS Rack should be about 500 Euros .

Power Rack .
Left hand drive Carrera RS models had the manual steering rack. Right hand drive models had the power-assisted steering rack. As I recall my part numbers, the 993RS steering rack is the standard 964 power-assisted steering rack.

Dear Bill,
The 993RS uses 18.5:1. The standard 993 uses 16.48:1
However after digging through the paperwork (when I should be working on my book) I have found that the standard 964 uses an 18.48:1 steering ratio.
You are correct in that the PET 6 parts catalogue shows the same part numbers for the 964 model year 1991 and up 964 347 009 04 is also used on the 993 Carrera RS.
Not quite so simple when we compare RHD.
This has been helpful because I can update my 993 Carrera RS data now with another subtle difference between LHD and RHD because they have different ratios.
Ciao,
Adrian.

PS: When you compare PET 5 to PET 6 a huge slice of data has been removed from PET 6.

Jason...

Now you have me seriously thinking... although my steering ratio is the same as 964 RS. I wonder how much more tossable it would really be...
