Arrow Another Survey -- will the 964 be your last Porsche?

The disk crash wiped out the last survey about the 964 being your first Porsche. Too bad -- I really enjoyed reading your stories about how you got into Porsches, etc.

Anyway, I thought I'd start a somewhat different survey. Will the 964 be your last Porsche? Or are you planning to buy another one when you win the Lotto, your kids are out of college, etc.

I'll start, since I don't believe in asking a question that I wouldn't answer. (Technical question count -- I would answer them if I could. )

Anyway, I think I would buy a 993 if I could get my finances back in shape. I know, GeoC2Cab -- how boring. Hope you still respect me, after all, I do know how to read the tire size #'s. ;-)

I waffle between buying a 993 or keeping my cab, which is a darned nice car in its own right. But I dunno, maybe a nice Arena Red 993 Targa, so I can have the top down effect as well as do some DE's without worrying about a roll bar.

Melissa,

One reason I updated from my SC to the C2 was to get a lower mileage newer Porsche that I intend to drive for a long time. I view the C2 as the last of the user-maintainable Porsche's, from a point where Porsche was still involved in many racing activities, and there was a trickle down of technology and performance parts to the masses (although 993's have a pretty respectable factory racing parts stockpile to pull from too). And forget the new water pumpers, I don't ever see myself in one of them.

BTW, I agree with you that Arena Red is one of the nicer Porsche colors.

While I plan on keeping my car for awhile, it will probably be my last Porsche.

993s are great cars. But, to be honest, their sloped front fenders have never made my heart go pitter-pitter-patter.

The 996 is much too large for my tastes--besides having more in common with a Boxster than a 911 (not that there's anything wrong with a Boxster ).

Suppose there's an outside chance I'll replace my car with a '94 3.6L Turbo someday, but it's unlikely. If my C2 ever becomes too tired/old to drive daily, I think I'll be looking at another make for my daily-driver.

Bill, how are you liking that '93 C2?

Melissa;

I always tell my wife that I'll sell my present car before buying a new one. I have a problem with finding too many excuses to keep them. 1985 Euro 930 Cab with 964 blood (964 crank w/98mm P & L's), 1991 Red C2 Cab w/tippy, can't sell my wife loves the tip, 1993 RSA Red, all option delete, I sold my White Carrera RS clone, and quickly purchased a Black 98 C4S, the 98 is pure touring luxury, it feels heavy, compared to my 964's, but it is more refined, But I do tell people that the 964 is Porsche best built car for quality. Porsche started to look at the bottom line when they built the 993's. I have been eyeing the 996 TT, just like Melissa has been eyeing the 993's. I have received a check for my 93 RSA and will turn it over to it new owner this week. I am now closer to picking up a 996TT.

Hi Melissa,

My current and first P-car is going to be with me for a long while. However, I would love to replace my daily driver (a low end French car) with an SC, but at the moment I'm a bit low on cash so this idea is on hold. It's a great pleasure getting in the C4 and firing it up, so I guess I'm hooked forever!

I might consider selling mine (in the distant future) only for a nice 993 C2/4S.

Bye,
Giorgio.

PS. Going for a 400 mls trip to Paris tomorrow, with the P-car of course - and can't wait.......

High,
YYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS!, 964 has won my heart to the core..., Of course I would still respect u in a 993 Melissa(after all l'm not dreaming, right? , arena red is a sweet color, maybe u can repaint ur 964!)I would get another Porsche if I won the lottery; either a 959 or a GT or both(depends on the win),no box, no 996, no 993 for me; the looks do nothing for me,I bought my 964 on sight because of it's looks, the 993 kinda looks like Porsche wanted to come out w/ a 928 again but had no market for it, so they popped the engine in the rear and said "hey look new 911" wooooo!<ducking from punches>
As I see it the best years of my car are comming up(kinda like fine wine, gets better w/age, and I'm not giving that to someone else .)
One question for George911v8; hey man do u just want the shell of that '97 turbo or the whole car?

I was just waiting to see how the world's formost 964 chauvinist (please interpret positively) would put it.

Yes, my 964 (an RSA type) may be the last Porsche I ever own. I know; I know. That's what I said about the previous 4 Porsches too. But this time I really mean it. Who am I trying to kid? No, of course not. They keep making them faster, easier to drive fast, and more comfortable too. As long as I'm allowed out on the roads there will be others. Please, someone stop me before I buy again.

Jim..

Getting the urge to "buy" again, but want the RSA to be your last?
Go ahead and buy, I'll "store" it for you in my garage for FREE!!! that way the RSA will still be your last Porsche. I promise I'll give it back....eventually

With only two days of 964 driving under my belt, that's akin to asking me on my honeymoon whether this will be my last spouse!

That aside, I love the bug eyes so I can't see a logical upgrade path from my '93 Turbo 3.6. For that reason I'd say this is the one and only Porsche I can see myself ever owning.

I love my 1990 C4 cab. My first Porsche. But - I would also love to try tome other vintages of 911, and other Porsches. Unfortunatley, I have so much $$ in my car that it would not be feasible to sell it, and the stock market is not in any shape for me to have a second car. I bought my car in 8/99 with 56k miles on it, and now it has 86k. My goal is to get to atleast 160k. Here is a list of cars that I dream about, either as second Porsche, or as a substitute for mine (only a dream at this point)
- early (pre-1975) 911 like Andy Jenks' (http://www.eisoftwareinc.com/andy/911.html) 250HP and only 2400 lbs. That would be a scream!! Someone said that the 993 seems heavy compared to the 964. Try one of these early cars on for size!
- RSA: These are great cars for the $$. Many in great shape. If I was going to buy another 964, this would be my first choice. I'd love to set it up like a Cup car - white with gutted interior and white paint on bare metal everywhere including roll bar/full cage.
- 993. Everyone complains about the front fenders. How about the rear. This is the best rear view of any P-car IMHO. Either as a Carrera, or an S, these are beutiful cars. Also - lots more power. You can't argue with that. So what if oil changes are a pain...
- 944S: great cheap PCA Club Racer. Check the classes. This is the best car for the $$. If I was going to go into Club Racing anytime between now and when the market gets to 3/00 levels, this is my only choice. 50/50 weight, great suspension upgrades, etc. I would get one if I had the space.
- 944 Turbo: hands down, best Porsche for the $$. I think I would have more trouble being competitive in Club Racing, but as a DE car, or fun car, this is less weight, more power, and way cheaper than any 964. Doesn't have the status of a 911, so it would be a great 2nd Porsche, for those who care about what our friends think.
- 914-6: I would love to get a hopped up 914. I was at the Glen with the Race-Cam guy who has a 3.6L in a 914. I think he said its from a '95 (sorry again, 964 fans). Talk about value for the $$, power to weight, etc. Put on a great suspension and some big brakes and you have a certified death-mobile!
- Lastly, how about a 2002 996? 3.6L, 320HP+, 3-spoke steering wheel, sunroof delete, 20+% stiffer, ultra-light 18" wheels, add Recaro SRDs, harnesses, roll-bar, B&B, K&N, and H&R Race Coilovers. Tell me that wouldn't kick butt!

So - will this be my last Porsche? God, I hope not!!!

Anyway - sorry for the rant. Like I said, I love my car, and the fact that I am stuck with it is bittersweet. If I ever sold it, I know I would hate myself for the rest of my life...

Melissa:

Hats off to you for starting another great post!

I went from an '86 Carrera to my current '90 C2. I will never get a 993. No need to. The 964 has similar power and retains most of the classic 911 look.

I love the power and refinement of my 964, but I still would like an older 911 along side it for the classic feel/driving experience. I sometimes miss fighting with that damn 915 tranny. The older cars have such great soul.

I think I would stop buying 911's if I could afford a 1994 3.6 Turbo in a goofy color...

If I had money coming out of my *ss, I would love to be able to buy a brand new 911 to show in concours events (I'd like to be the guy in 25 yrs bringing in a 2002 911 with 600 miles on it to a PCA Concours event). It would be nice to have a 911 that only I owned since it was new. I'd still have an older 911 to drive though.

Just my thoughts...

I guess I need to chime in. Another great topic.

It's like asking a social drinker if this glass of wine will be his last. I doubt it!!!

I agree the 964 and the 993 are kissing cousins - so no need to get a 993. A TT may be nice, but where do I drive it. Having owned a 914-6 before, I am "secretly" lusting after a Boxter, at least for a brief "affair". I've only driven a Boxter around the block once or twice, but the mid engine fascinates me.

The answer is no the 964 will not be my last. But what else is there?

As I said in the last survey, my car feels so solid that bar a catastrophic mechanical failure or a tangle with a soccer mommy in a SUV this will be my one and only 911.

Will my 964 be my last Porsche? I don't know. My '91 C4 had 18K miles on it when I bought it in January, and now it's up to 23K. At the rate I drive it (generally weekends only, but occasionally during the week to), I'm guessing my annual mileage will be 6K-7.5K/year. If I keep it five years and assume a "worst case" use of 7.5K/year, it means after I've owned the car five years, I'll have 55.5K miles on it...still a relatively low mileage car considering at that point the car will be fifteen years old. I see no reason why I couldn't easilly keep it ten years without having any major problems, so reliability really shouldn't be an issue.

I have to agree with Bill Gregory about the 964 series being the last owner serviceable of the 911 series. I suppose the 993 is still somewhat serviceable, but I've read that the transmission on it is has a "swap out" only policy, where you can't get parts and have to buy a rebuilt or new unit if it needs anything other than relatively minor repairs (I've NEVER been able to confirm that, but Getrag pulled the same stunt on the AWD trannys they put on the Stealth RT/TTs and Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4s...it also caused their resale prices to plummet!). From what I've seen of the Boxters and 996s, unless you have a lift at your disposal, forget about working on them yourselves. As far as I'm concerned, working on a car yourself is half the fun of owning it.

I like the looks of the 993, but I'm not impressed with the appearance of the 996 (but I AM impressed with their performance). I like the looks of the Boxter, but they aren't all that fast, they're convertables (unless you buy the hard top add-on...and I don't like convertables), and unless you like jacking the car 2-3 feet in the air and working on your back, they ARE NOT owner serviceable.

So would I buy another Porsche? If the day comes when I get tired of my 964, which I think will be YEARS from now at the earliest, I might consider a 993, but then again, it also depends on what else Porsche comes up with in the next five to ten years.

All I know for certain is that I like what I have now, and it should be good for at LEAST five years, so I may consider re-looking at this issue at that time.

Cheers,

Bill Wagner
