Default OT - What else do you drive?

Just curious what other vehicles people have - and why. I confess that part of the reason is because I've decided to sell the dull 4x4 I have and buy something else as a daily run around and I'm looking for some ideas (probably spend approx £7K). But I'm curious to know what we all own anyway.

I thought there was a thread like this a while ago, but can't find it.

I'll start - in addition to the 964 :

'99 Yamaha R1 (1000cc motorcycle, 140bhp, 170kgs - wheelie at 80mph without using the clutch). Why? Because it's a huge amount of fun and literally destroys any other vehicle on the road (if you can keep the front wheel down).

'95 Mitsubishi Pajero (4x4 diesel automatic - imported version of Shogun). Why? Because I was going out with a girl who had a horse and bought a horse box and a car that could pull it so we could visit shows. No practical reason for it now, so think I'll trade it in for something more economical and newer.

Oh - and finally - a mountain bike. Can't even remember the make. Why? Because many years ago I was under the mis-apprehension I would exercise and get slim and fit. Yeah - very likely - I still haven't actually understood the point of cycling somewhere when we have vehicles with engines!

Audi A4 2.0 Avant with CVT gearbox, basically an easy comfortable drive for lugging stuff around and room for the missus and sprog.

I also have a mountain bike which was well used a few years ago, around Epping Forest and Roding Valley but when you go into my garage and you have a choice of:

a. Mountain bike or
b. 964

Which would you take for a bit of fun?

For some reason, I keep wanting to buy a MkII VW Scirocco GTX, although seeing as a hardly put any miles on the 964, it would be a waste of time. I can use the funds instead as a deposit on a suspension upgrade for the 964!

Dodge Ram truck to drag my boats around.
1964 230SL Euro model Mercedes. At 60 MPH its winding out at 4K RPM in 4th gear. What a great sounding engine and pretty quick. Has mechanical fuel injection. Women seem to like riding in it more then the P car. For sure gets a lot more looks and comments. Have both hard and soft tops. Impractical but at least its got a huge trunk, light weight aluminum hood and doors and rear seat delete!

That and a 964? Aren't you being slightly greedy?

Must confess - the sensible side of me thinks I should replace my 4x4 with a nice diesel auto estate or hatchback (it is actually quite nice having an auto around town). But when I was flicking through autotrader, I came across a Supra TT - used to have one of those and it would make a fun daily runaround!

Dave, not meaning to hijack the thread but I wouldn't bother spending that much on a runaround. Why not get a 5 year old Polo or something instead? And spend the rest on Motec?

I've got a Merc A Class for sale at £4k - great runabout, and a shameless plug...

think of the Motec.

As other driver have Peugeot 306 - 2 seater diesel beater for stations, and moving the dog around in. No fun at all, but entirely competent and reliable. The fecking lights never fall out of the front for a start...

2002 VW Lupo GTi - lovely little car which is good for virtually anything. Surprisingly refined, too.

1977 Fiat X1/9 - for sunny days. So light and agile, basic engineering meets great design. (And lousy quality!)

Pace mountain bike - see Dave's comments, above.

306? No! I used to have a 306-GTi-6 which was the biggest pile of cr.... er, rubbish... ever. A £10K car that cost £18K. No thank you very much!

Christer - although it's a fair point, I figure that I may as well get something half decent if it's what I'm going to drive every day.

Yes, I just think that there is not going to be much difference between say a 2003 Polo and a 1998 Polo from a driving perspective....or space perspective....or....from any perspective...

True - but I must confess a Polo wasn't on my list.

I was thinking more along the lines of a 5 year old Golf diesel, or maybe an A3 (which would mean increasing the budget slightly) - something like that.

1999 A4 Avant 1.8T with a GIAC Stage 1 chip to get it to 200 bhp. Have had it since new, and it has been very dependable. Great in all sorts of weather, especially snow.
