The answer is NO! Detonations suggest incorrect detonation. This is eventually a timing issue but can be caused by other things like aftermarket chips and cup bypass pipes,

I'm guessing you may be referring to small backfires when changing gears in a "spirited" fashion??
If so, the "cup pipe" may be suspect as when installed, often they don't seal up the same as your factory components...causing small areas where cold air can be ingested into the hot exhaust system during periods of decel (in between gears and downshifting).
NOW, if you are in fact experiencing spark DETONATION...that, my friend, is NOT a normal issue and is a BAD thing!
Please determine if you are referring to spark detonation (ping/knock) or small backfiring.
Alex, what are we calling "detonation"??

ciao
Pietro
Further, when I cut my airbox open (similar to the Cup airboxes sold by Fabspeed and others), the popping volume diminished and was less frequent. I mention this because Pietro's comment suggests a fuel mixture link which I think is possible. Cutting the airbox seems to have affected this mix as well.

...now let's take a moment to sit down in a circle and sing "Kumbaya".
Now that's what I call getting to the bottom of something.
