Default Windshields, What’s the latest options

My 90 went in for a rust bubble repair on the corner of the windshield last week and since the windshield is tired and had to come out I’ve decided to replace it. I will be keeping the seal and reusing it since its in good shape and I’ve heard the new seals don’t fit well.

If anyone has gone through the replacement process recently I would appreciate hearing what you selected and what options were available to you. The last time I had 964 glass done was on my Targa about 7 years ago and I believe options have changed since then.

Any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I replaced mine ('93 Cab) back in '21 due to rock strike...I ordered my windshield through my local Porsche dealer and used their "preferred" installer. Looking back through my records, this is what I found. Florida has zero deductible glass coverage so I didn't have to pay per se...if I recall correctly the total install was around $2400. Hope this helps...

Qty Part Number Description
1.0 964 541 011 10 Windshield-(W/Band,Antenna)
1.0 40H 40 Per NAGS Hour
1.0 HAH000004 Adhesive-(1.5,Urethane,Dam,Primer)
1.0 964 541 225 00 Frame-(Glass,Sealing)

Thank you, Mike.

It seems like options have narrowed down since the last time I went through this. At that time I recall there were three or four options and it seems there are maybe two now. I checked dealer pricing online and it ranges from $1300 to $1550 depending on the dealer. I’m waiting to see what the body shop comes up with as well for comparison.

I guess I get better pricing but I paid $995 for green top factory windshield. Although the gray top was the same price. The bigger issue is the seals coming through are garbage and don't seat properly. They all seem to be coming a slight bit short and the seams are poorly done. I am waiting on a third from Porsche to get a good one.

Anthony where did you buy yours? Most of the places I’m seeing will need shipping and at that price it would be worth considering an east coast dealer.

I will be talking to the body shop today to see if they were able to save the seal, hopefully they could since it was in great shape and fit well.

I purchased mine from the local dealership. No shipping involved. Always ask for your 10% PCA discount although it appears prices have increased recently like everything else. .

UPDATE:

The bodyshop was able to save the seal and it will be reused. They’re also recommending OE Glass from Porsche and quoted list price for the glass. My local dealer quoted $1,520 but noted that the current 964 glass is actually made in Mexico which surprised me as I don’t recall Mexico being a typical supplier of high quality glass.

From my research the other two options are glass from China and Japan. I’m not keen on anything from China due to inconsistencies in quality but Japan seems like a possible option and price would be less than half OE glass. If I’m not mistaken, Pilkington was bought out by a Japanese company 15 years ago so the Japanese brand would likely be Pilkington which I’ve heard is good quality and I believe its what I had installed on my Targa 7 years ago.

Does anyone have recently installed Pilkington and Porsche OE Glass (new supply) to confirm any of the above?

Just looked up my invoice from Porsche dealer...granted this was 3 years ago...list price was $1535.34 and I paid $1151.51 (not sure how I got the discount?). The seal was another $150 ($200 list). I can't find the glass company install costs since insurance was billed directly but recall the total material and labor was around $2400. Submitted dealer invoice and insurance company paid it with no questions. I watched the removal/install and regret that I didn't pay close enough attention to how they handled the radio antenna connection to the windshield.

This is my windshield stamping below..

Thanks Mike! So OE is Pilkington as of 3 years ago.

As my car is in for the rust repair the windshield labor is built into the repair work.

Thank you for the receipt, this is helpful as it’s similar to what I’m having done. Can you confirm when this work was done as the list price looks lower than what I’m getting quoted for glass.

Need to repair my own rust spot at the bottom of the windshield cowl - so is the move now to reuse our original seal rather than buying a new one from Porsche?

Ps . I am really really glad they used a new seal for my case / car as it killed the wind noise to zero as well. Just FYI / after all they are 30+ years old .
