Hi everyone I have a very hypothetical question that could be a pipe dream but I seek clarification.
If I do have a Bosch Monotronic DME/ECU for any German car lets say a Mercedes for example and the pins on the DME/ECU match up with the wiring harness of the Porsche 964 3.6L. If I open it up and remove the chip on the ECU and solder the Fabspeed DME/ECU upgrade Chip for the 964, would I essentially be able to run it on the car as I have changed the program on the DME/ECU?
Also is there a way to reprogram an ECU through the computer by installing a stock firmware of the 964 ECU?
Drop some knowledge bombs on me everyone, I'm keen to learn and also understand the restrictions and possibilities of ECU/DME for 964 Porsche.
There may be a compatible motronic box from a different make/model out there, but nobody has found it to my knowledge. All of them have hardware differences and without being familiar with the internals of each box its just guess work. Guess work that can easily lead to cooking components attached to the ecu too.
Is yours having issues? There are a few folks who repair them.

Honestly when I got the engine I got it without an ECU its a 964 3.6L engine so I'm just trying to figure out how to get an ECU for the car and not spend a lot of money.
The idea of Steve Wong Chips is definitely a good idea though
Honestly Good idea but do they supply an ECU if you don't have an old one?
No, Steve Wong will only provide the chip. You need the ECU, they are available on the secondhand market, last time I looked they were in the 750-1000 range but who knows where they stand now. Mike @ Autobahn as mentioned above is a great source since Singer don't keep the ECUs obviously.
If you don't have the ECU, I assume you also don't have the harnesses (engine harness or harness for the rest of the car). That might be the bigger problem area for you as they've gotten tricky to find over the years. No idea what your plans are for the engine - if it's going into a 964, you probably need that harness, if it's going somewhere else, you're probably gonna want to explore things like Motec, megasquirt, etc.
