Default Which chip to go with?

Hi All,

I'm in the process of selling my Autothority MAFS and putting back the stock MAF and airbox w/ a K&N.

Any recommendations on chips out there that provide awesome power results?

I've tried the Weltmeister chip prior to the Autothority MAFS and it was weak, but better than stock.

I currently have a LWF, B&B headers w/ B&B single outlet muffler. Which chip provided the best "bang for the buck"?

On Ebay there are several types ranging from custom to RUF.

Custom noname:

Porsche 964 Ruf Motronic Tuning Chip B.P.U. :

Are these any good?

Thanks

No chip is going to provide "awesome power" results. More power with our cars usually means making damn sure you are using good gas so the timing does not get retarded when it gets hot. About the best you could do is swap the whole ECU for one from an RS (if you could find one). I'm to lazy to go pull out Adrian's book, but I think that swap will get you to near 300 hp.

I will probably switch to a GIAC chip later this year because I don't think I'll ever find an RS ECU and certainly not at the price I would be willing to pay (<$500). I don't care if I have to use 100 octane with the chip as my 964 is track only.

GP:

Tom offered some excellent advice;...nobody's chip makes a car "grow horns",...

I would simply tell you that any chip you choose should be compatible with your 91 octane fuel and the rev limiter should not be altered unless the engine internals have been upgraded.

Tom's right. "Awesome" and n/a 964's just don't happen. I tweaked my old '94 RS America to 280hp flywheel pushing 2800lbs (give or take...) stripped down with an Authothority chip, cold air cone in-take and B&B exhaust (one tip.) and in-take and exhaust. I like GIAC but that's spendy. I think Xede is the best bang for buck with a Xede chip but that's just on spec because I haven't driven a n/a 3.6 with that setup. Their 993 Turbo results are spectacular (see other threads.)

Thanks for the input,

Forget the "Awesome power" remark, now let me ask. What or Who makes a chip that handles a LWF setup?

Does UniChip work on our cars?

The best chip involves live remapping of your own car, period. To date using this technique on a variety of 964's & 993's we have seen 290bhp from a 130,000mile 964, 297bhp from a 964RS, 305bhp from a 993 non VR and 309bhp from a 993VR engine. All these cars has stock intake and heat exchangers, the 993s had stock cats, the 964s no cats, most with K&N filters or similar.
The secret to getting the best from the remap is not to get wound up on the top end power. We actually map from 2000rpm upwards in all load ranges (20% throttle to 100%) to ensure that the whole engine, at any load and any rpm, is truly optimised. As an example the 993VR engines we did recently ended up with as much power at the tyre afterwards as they had at the flywheel before.
I cannot comment onthe Unichip other than as an engineer I have never had a lot of faith in adding parts to cure a problem, its a bit like treating the symptoms of an illness rather than the disease.

I´ve tried both a custom made chip and I bought a RUF chip through Ebay, the RUF chip seems to have in my opinion more end power and goes a bit further on the rpms, the custom chip was made from my original chip, it maintains the original rpm limit.

For the use I make to the car I am going to sell the ruf chip and go back to the stock or the custom one. So if anyone is interested?

I bought a GIAC chip from Evomotorsports. It works well as part of their Level 3 tuning system, i.e. intake, cat bypass and g-pipe. 0-60 times are in the very low 5's and the awd dyno numbers were 228.5 hp/224 lb ft (not sure how much of an improvement this was since I had no "before" numbers ). The chip alone did not make a difference according to my G-Tech tests.

Since you have some different mods, you may want to give Todd Zuccone at Evomotorsports a call to see what he has available. They tout a chip which supposedly cures the LWF stalling issues. Also, Steve Weiner at Rennsport Systems (see above) also sells the GIAC chip and has quite a few satisfied customers on the 993 board (and he doesn't plug his products shamelessly ). Both are Rennlist sponsors, too.

Good to see Colin Belton back in the mix. Here's 9m's take on bolt ons.

I use a RS lightweight chip from TPC. I basically use it for it's ability to keep my car from stalling with the lightweight flywheel. I think it gives a bit of an extra kick which I'm told is results from a smoother/more agressive curve. Ninemeister seems to have said what I have heard the most -- the chip needs to be specifically tuned to your car and its modifications.

Ninemeister -- Is it possible to get the Motec conversion done in the US? I seem to recall reading that you could not just order the kit because you needed it to do the road mapping yourselves in the UK.

Any comments on it?
Where can one get one?

Thanks

Bought several but happiest with Ruf. Regarding the awesome not being equated with 964 remark, I fell like I get awesome performance out of my 964 NA, but has taken $$$ to do it.

Hi Doug,

Where did you get your RUF Chip?

Does it work with a LWF and full race B&B headers/muffler?

Thanks

Since Steve is too low-key to hawk his own stuff here, let me say that I have been very happy with my Steve Weiner chip for my 993. I'm guessing you'd be happy with it for your 964.
