Default Anyone replaced electric window motor??

I can't seem to determine whether the window motor swap-out is easy or whether its worth paying my local Porsche guy the £100 for 2 hrs labour + VAT.

If anyone has done this before, can you confirm whtehr its a pain in the **** or a <3 hr DIY.

Thanks

PS what should I use to reseal the plastic sheet on the door skin??

Dear John,
Pain in the *** job. There is only one area I dislike intently and that is door trims. The 964 door trim is not super complicated but be prepared for things not fitting back, pulling plugs off door leds and the like. Setting the window regulator up takes some patience as well.
I changed out my motor myself but when the regulator failed and it was the problem all along I decided the mechanics could do it because it was raining.
It is one of those jobs that once you have done it you will say to yourself, "why did I not pay out the money?" and then laugh.
Ciao,
Adrian

Just the answer I needed - they can charge me 2hrs - I'll save myself 8 hrs & some skinned knuckles!

Arjan & I replaced my regulator in about two hours. Which is essentially the same job as replacing the motor. But, Arjan is also a professional mechanic by trade, which surely reduced the job's time and complexity. To be honest, it's not a real simple job. The regulator is unwieldy and must be handled with care (spring-loaded).

As has been written before, the job is shown in Wayne Demsey's 101 Projects for your Porsche 911. The only difference being use of conventional bolts on the 911SC in Wayne's book, where we have torx heads for one particular set of bolts (I forget which ones).

Best of luck...

Default Just curious...

...WHAT part are you referring to as the REGULATOR??

I've had a couple doors COMPLETELY apart for shell replacement, it's fairly easy to swap everything when you have the new shell on a sawhorse and the old door next to it, swapping everything over...but I would imagine it is a pain to change out the motor and/or the "regulator" with all the "guts" in there!

Are you referring to the large sickle-shaped gear that runs off the motor or what?

Just wanna make sure I'm up on this nomenclature stuff!

Adrian, I'm surprised that you find the door trims a hassle. Mine are very straightforward to remove and replace.

Cheers

Jeff,

Yep, we're talking about the sickle-shaped gear, aka "cross-arm" per PET 804-10. And, we're talking about getting it out and in with the door mounted. Not easy, but not terribly difficult, either.

Check the the currently running thread electric window motor swap-out for more discussion.

Yeah, I agree...and second that.

Mr. "Sickle Gear" is a P.I.T.A. to get out of there and not scratch up the window tinting, door interior, etc.

Okay, just wanted to get on board with you guys' terminology.
