Default Rear jack point?

Finished my front calipers and now it's time to go onto the rear. Where is the best place to jack up the rear of the car?

In spite of what some say do not use the engine casing. There are jack points ahead of each rear wheel, so one wheel at a time. I have seen a bracket that you attach to rear mount that comes down beneath the engine to create a single jack point, but when I looked, they were only available for earlier 911s.

The problem I have with using the jack points is that after the car is jacked up there's no convenient place to put a jack stand. Front has same issue.

Some folks have put together a bar that bridges the front and rear jack points so you can lift side of car from center, then put jack stands under the bar.

Maybe others can recommend secure points to put jack stands, but I'm a bit reluctant to experiment.

Good luck,

Dan

Dan another alternative is the jackpoint jack stands. I agree that raising these cars is a PITA and I've found this to be true for most newer Porsches.

I went poking around for a combo jack-jackstand and found the RennStand. Kind of pricey. Also its longish and might interfere with suspension components.

If it fit it would be a solution.

I use jack points stands. Makes it easy.

I only have floor jack and jackstands. For the front I just used a piece of wood and raised up under the frunk.. works fine. Just didn't know where to put the floor jack for the rear.

yes… Does anybody know why I can't get photobucket to post pictures anymore

You can use the spot at the suspension points.

Mooty is right.

I know that it has been done a for a long time, but I have to say, once my engine project is finished, I am going to be really fearful of lifting at the case for fear of upsetting the seal between the case halves. I know it shouldn't matter, but nonetheless, it helped me decide to buy a scissor lift to avoid all of these issues.

I'll sleep a little bit better....

I lifted mine by the case and found no damage whatsoever when I pulled the engine case apart. However I'm with you on the scissor lift. I'm actually looking forward to putting the engine back in and have no fear about pulling it again.

So when you say lifting by the case.... should i put a piece of wood under the jack to distribute the weight across the engine like i did under the frunk?

That's fine. I use a hockey puck (not my picture)

Lift it up high, then place the jack stands under the lift support on the body in front of the rear wheels.

Default Jacking engine case

I had just been reading through owner's manual and they specifically say to not use engine case as jack point. If you look at case there's no way to engage case uniformly to distribute load. I had attempted to.make a mold to cast a block that would custom fit to case. First one didn't come out so good, as could be expected. I then bought a 2 post maxjack lift. I have a C4 and thought scissor lifts at some point would get in the way.

That being said, there's still times you want to jack one tire. It seems to me jackpot stands might be way to go.

I too had put together a wood bar to jack front that worked until I lowered front end .

I can recall using trailing arm to body point once for jack stand, but I had to practically crawl under car to get stand secure, IIRC. Been a while. Kind of defeats the purpose.

I think PITA properly describes jacking and supporting car.

The engine and transmission weigh approx 350kg and even with a lift they are supported on the case jacking point when the engine is extracted. I don’t pretend to understand the engineering forces (I’m still incredulous how much weight hangs off a few bolts on the yoke) but it works for me. The only rider is that I can see it impacting on original hydraulic engine mounts.

I know this doesn't directly answer the single rear jacking point question, but in terms of speed of deploy and security liftbars have been serving me quite well. On the flip side - they are pain to store in the garage and if your car is lowered you need to first drive on low ramps or use ultra low garage jack. Using them I was able to drop engine when using the truck jack stands on full height.

Thanks!
Andrew
