Down here, The most common thing is to find your most preferred tuner, and get what he recommends. Because he knows how to use the software and hardware from the back of his head. You don't need tech support from the ECU manufacture.

If you're buying it so you can tune ect. Then yes, you want something with a lot of support, especially for the make of your car.

Paully,
you should also consider the Emtron KV8.

It's an Aussie product but a genuine Motec M-series competitor - it's what I've gone with.

The idle settings were extremely limited and I would not have complained about it if the idle was fine, it was not. Also acceleration enrichment control strategies could have been much better.
But I have seen worse ECU's so it was ok.
Did you tune any motecs? I wonder how are they compared in the ease of tuning department. Old motec use dos application that probably isn't too user friendly.

Nissan you tuned, did it used CAN wideband? If it did, does it work as intended?

Yes, it had CAN wideband and it worked quite well actually. Though tuning fuel table lacked the possibility of collecting all your wanted tables to one screen and adjust them. You needed to access each of them separately, greatly increasing tuning time.

I have tuned few Motecs, not the old DOS based but newer ones. Let's say that for the money you should expect better software. Their strentgh is their name and the straight-forward install that does not let you make mistakes. But also does not let you use your own head too much :P It's like Apple vs Android only Motec being Apple without the intuitivity Tried and true is good but life moves on and we live in 2016 not 1996.

the haltech elite series, especially the 750 looks live a very good tuning base. Pretty much make your own tables for any input/output to do anything you want. a lot if info on their YouTube channel.

The advantage of using Motec is the accrued knowledge built up by 1000's of users. Many of them pro or semi pro teams. For sure they've created a very good product and have matched it with a cagey sales model. I'm sure Mr & Mrs Motec don't go hungry.

But I agree with Pauly where you say you go with what your chosen tuner is most comfortable with within reason.

You're showing your age with the DOS based Motecs, I had an M4 and got tired of trying to find working DOS computers, switched to the M84 which is windows based and have been very happy with it.

Again like everyone else has mentioned, go with the one your tuner is most familiar with.

Wanna sell the M4? I'd standalone my ducati but it has to be something classy even if it needs dos.

Edit:jeez, these are still $2k used on ebay.... Is that housing made of gold by any chance?

I'll see if I can find it. I wouldn't pay 2000 for an M4, you can get an M84 new for $2400. You will need to locate a DOS computer as the last one I had crashed and I chucked it.

I work as system admin so dos box is the least problem. Lemme know how much you want if you find it.
