Default What weight synthetic oil for tranny/diff

Manual calls for 80w GL-4. Mobil 1 comes in 75W-90 and 75W-140 both GL-5 (web site says okay for service grade GL-4).

Amsoil comes in those plus other weights but not straight 80W.

What should I use?

TIA

Jeff

I run Redline 75w90NS mixed with Redline Heavy Shockproof gear oil. I'd run either 75W90 or straight 90w if that's all you had. I highly recommend the Redline Heavy Shockproof and will be changing my gear lube to 100% that stuff. Costs a bit of power due to frictional drag, but the amount of protection and durability that lube provides is truly better than anything else.

However, depends if you've got LSD or not in your tranny.

I run Red Line Heavy Shockproof in my 75% LSD race tranny. Seems to work great.

Definitely go with Shockproof then, it's with LSD that you may want to consider their 75w90.

944turbo, what LSD is yours? Freshly rebuilt?

Swepco gear oil can't be beat!! Chad Viso runs Swepco oils in his 614 hp TT 996 , tranny, diff, and motor!!! Check out what the big hp people run, more often than not its Swepco, it actually raise's you're oil pressure after hard lapping!!! Many tuners swear by the stuff, and its not synthetic!!! just my 0.02 cents.

How about some specifics. If Shockproof what weight (light, medium, or heavy) if not Shockproof but Redline what weight is appropriate? If Swepco then which 201, 203, 210, or 212? What weight?

Thanks, anyone knwo what the difference between GL-4 and GL-5 is? (besides 1) ;-)

I can't get any more specific for Redline, Heavy Shockproof, then 75w90NS, in that order.

Hank , I use Swepco 201 for the diff and tranny, its an 80/ 90 weight, i also spoke to a friend who does endurance racing and he said for extreme conditions he would sometimes use Swepco 201 140/weight!! Hope that helps,

I called Redlne and they recommended their MTL product which carries a API service classification of GL-4. They did not recommend shockproof or the other products that are GL-5. Their website states that GL-5 lubricants are coroisive to some transmission components particularly syncros.

Mobil one responded that they do not have a product that will work. (funny because local p-dealer says they use it sometimes). No direct word from swepco or Amsoil yet.

Yep, Amsoil technical desk said 75 w 90 (series 2000) was the right product. He confirmed that GL-5 would not be suitable where GL-4 is required however the product above is rated for GL-2 through GL-5 so is fine for our tranny/diff.
