Default The Right Exhaust Note

My '89 is due for exhaust and I've been doing some searching around. While I'm seduced by the horsepower gains that can be had, what often seems to accompany those gains is a raspy/poppy/sputtery sounding exhaust, similar to a tongue vibrating between an upper and lower lip...if you know what I mean.

I like the low tones of the stock exhaust, so I'm wondering if there is anything comparable but with some good HP gains also.

Fabspeed is probably your best bet.

best sound is subjective...
i think the best sounding 944 exhaust is one that really lets you hear the individual pulses of the engine rather than a smooth constant mmurrrrrrrrrr

the 4-2-1 manifolds certainly help

rasp is often dealt with via the catalyst, and/or a resonator. removing one or the other can make the raspiness much more pronounced.

you might be well-served with a 3" downpipe-back system with a large straight-thru muffler at the back end (magnaflow?).

in the middle a long cylinder-shape straight thru muffler or resonator would do well...do you need a CAT for emissions where you are?

+1. I'm running fabspeed from the headers with a cat delete and it's heavenly. Very low grunty sounds and I've gotten a lot of "what's under the hood? a v8?" At gas stations.

Yeah, I'm not going to have to worry about emissions so cat delete is in the mix. But if removing the cat pronounces the rasp, maybe I'll consider keeping it. From what I can hear on YouTube I lean towards the Fabspeed. Seems like the easiest. Still, stock sounds nicer imo.

I've been very happy with my California 'legal' 3" LR turbo back with magnaflow 3" cat and no muffler. It is loud, and with the Max chips it pops a bit on overrun, but I like loud, and dislike back pressure. There are two distinctly different pops, one way louder than the other; my theory is that the loud ones are when the wastegate is open, but I can't confirm this.

Lindsey 3", no cat, and a Pypes M-80 "muffler" gets the job done for me.

I'm doing a cat delete, Borla exhaust. I can post up some video in about a week. Not sure when you are making your decision.

It's a straight through muffler, 3" in 3" out with no baffling or trickery to alter the sound, so it sounds like a 951 engine. I find garbage exhaust notes come from mufflers trying to tune for a certain sound.

Good point.

I'll need to make some sort of decision in the next 2 weeks. Mine's suffering from a severe case of muffler rot for sure, so something has to happen.

That would be a appreciated. It'd be nice to have a (another?) thread with videos of most of the exhaust options. Whatever I decide on I"ll post a video as well.
