-86 and 87+ oil pan differences?
Hi,
Wondering if anyone can enlighten me on the differences of the oil pans up through 1986, and 1987+.
I know the 1987+ have provisions for the oil level sender, but is there any capacity difference, any baffling difference, etc?
Just realized (after an engine rebuild and 10 subsequent years of ownership, lol) that my oil pan is a 1987+ piece...it has the oil level sender "delete plate" above the drain plug. Car is an early 1985, engine block has the early "manual eccentric" belt tensioner and early-type OPRV.

To my knowledge the early oil pickup wont reach all the way down in a late style pan. So you need the later oil pickup as well. Also the dipstick is different. Might be other differences aswell.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

The 86 has a flat bottom on the inside of the pan with a wider pickup tube head. The 87+ have the oil sensor provision and have a dimple in the bottom of the pan and use a different smaller diameter head pickup tube and it is 1/8" longer so it receses in the dimple of the pan. Also the 87+ have crank scrapers built into the plastic instert. That's all I could see from the two i have.

You wont have issues with oilpressure during normal driving if you have the old pickup tube with the late pan. However if you drive the car hard on twisty roads or on a trackday you might have issues. The late dipstick is longer and round in it's shape. Old one is flat like the 80:S 911:s.

Just a quick thought . I have the 1986 pan and would like to change the pickup tube again. threw in a second hand one last time it broke and welded it for added protection with extra metal . My mechanic smart as he is bought a reinforced pickup tube "whatever that is" I suspect it is a later longer tube , would the longer tube fit a 1986 pan ?

I don't see any issue with using a short pick-up with a sump pan, but you will not get the benefit of a lowered pick-up.
For reinforcing, they can done as a custom one off. One of our vendors also makes a reinforcing bracket that needs to be either welded or brazed to the factory pick-up tube.

-----------------------------Use the right setup made to work with each other are else you Risk Oil Starvation!!!!------------------------------------------------
The Pan on the 87+ has (3) major difference, #1 The 1987+Pan has a lower cut out so the sump can sit lower in the oil pan. #2 The 1987+ pan has a side mount port for a oil level sending unit. #3 The inside of the pan has more longer fins so the oil can drain back to the pan faster on the 87+ late model version.
-86 has early style OPRV on block
I hope my numbers are right so double check.

The 944 turbo or S2 968 would have the highest capacity of oil, the oil cooler on the turbo is the biggest factory container to add volume. Stock oil cooler is around 22.51ci
here is a Lindsey link of the pickup

I'll have to look at pictures to see which pickup I have.
Dipstick has the yellow plastic handle...how to identify it otherwise?
I have been running this setup for over 10 years now and the engine was complete in the car when I bought it in 2005, but there were 0 maintenance records. No oil pressure issues ever, for me...
Can anybody visually identify this pickup version? This picture was taken in 2010 when I had the engine out for crash repair.
