Default Is this car worth $9K............

I have decided to plunge into a 944 after having owned many c4 corvettes and BMW's over the years and wrenching on them. I just sold a 1996 c4 LT-4 M6 vette with 82k on the clock for 13k and would like to find a good 944 Turbo to hit the track with (hdpe) and drive on the weekends.

I have been doing a lot of research on these forums and know the general pitfalls of of the car. Would like an 88 or 89 mostly (I think). The mileage on most of them are pretty high and anything under 80k seems to be priced really high, but 200k miles seems to be a little higher than the average car for sale.

I think I would like a 89 Turbo since it has the most upgraded suspension and horsepower. Are they worth the extra premium? Is there a more efficient route to go down with upgrades to an older car?

Here is the car on ebay. I am about 40 miles away I think so I could go see it in person.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-944-...m=262282498133

Seems pretty legit, but the mileage scares me as all non metal bits that are still original are wearing out.

Just want your thoughts and concerns, I would have a ppi done by probably the dealer in the area, although the guy representing the seller seems to have a very good reputation with the 944 community.

I have the buyers guide from this website bookmarked on my phone so I use it as a reference. I can work on cars pretty well, I have done all my own BMW e46 work and have extensive knowledge of C4 and C5 corvette workings. I have Zero experience with Turbo systems, so that would all be new to me.

Any opinions would be great. Thanks.

It is being sold by Lart who is very well known in here. He's the best reseller of parts around and can be trusted. Looks like a nice enough car for your purposes. The price of these cars is actually going up...(finally). If you're going to DE it then you will be modifying / replacing some of the parts anyway.

Well, Lart who is a site sponsor on here is selling it. You can ask him any questions, I don't think you should be scared of the milage considering the current owner is a porsche tech with hopefully extensive documentation.

Is 9.5k too much for a turbo s 944? A turbo s is one of the most desirable/expensive variant of the 944 lineup, the other being the 944 s2. Go check out the car if you like it and go from there, Lart's a reasonable guy and I think he would bend over backwards to help anyone looking to purchase anything from him.

My 2cents.

I don't think the price is unreasonable. As far as it being and 89 turbo, its no longer original. I'd classify this more as a nice 944 turbo with some great upgrades. This one is to drive and enjoy. Consider the cost of the maf kit, wastegate, and turbo that's a few thousand in itself.

No car ever leaves Lart's place, alive.

That must be a cardboard replica.

200k miles isn't a bad thing . If you want to drive with the car then don't look cars ~20-80k miles .
Sitting car can feel good and look solid but after you use it for some time it will 'fall off' and then to fix it :S lot of $$$ .
In fact my NA 944 86' had 300 000km never rebuilt engine was so good inside that my experienced builder was amazed .
It was better he ever has seen and even from a 50k car . I think mostly the wear comes driving the car cold . Like small 10 minute drives .
Milage is low but wear is like 90 times worse

Another happy Lart customer here...I think that car looks like a great deal. The performance mods on that car pretty much supersede the '89 power upgrades anyway, but you still get the LSD, M030 suspension, bigger brakes etc. If you care about those things, then buying an 89 is the way to go imo, because the premium you pay for the 89 would never pay for you to make those upgrades yourself to an early Turbo. I wouldn't worry about the mileage for any practical reason, as long as it passes a good inspection.

They are expensive to own but it sounds like you've done your research in that regard.

I bought a turbo with 78k on it 8 years ago, other than routine servicing and parts I wanted to fit it's run fine during the 15k I've added. Sure if a car has stood for years there may be issues, but low annual mileage means nothing on a cherished well maintained car.

If the car had any issues, Lart would have parted it in a heartbeat.

Yes proper maintenance is the key . I did just want to point out that mileage isn't a problem . A friend bought a BMW 530 2006 from germany . It had like 100k miles . Did drive for 2 years and no problems whatsoever . One day he went to official (United Motors ) dealer and found out that this car really had 335k miles on it . Car didn't show any wear and tear what you would expect

These cars are now 30 years old. Any PPI should be taken with a grain of salt IMO. I believe that this car is almost a smokin deal. You get all the goodies, AOR trans, MO30 suspension and brakes, Carillo rods, a clean interior. A car you can drive right away. I would do a inspection of the belts, look for obvious leaks and hose issues but that's it. That being said these cars are old and need lots of TLC. If you're paying to have work done there aren't many techs still around that really know these cars, and the rest will charge your first born simply because of the work involved. I trust that Lart has represented the car with honesty and integrity.

If you don't buy this car NOW, it will be gone by the time you decide to do so.

The seller is one of the most reputable sellers in the entire worldwide Porsche community!
