Default Ghetto IC modifications

Looking at a 951 stock intercooler it's obvious there's a problem with the incoming end tank. If it's a design fault or done on purpose (the 951 couldn't be faster than the 911, remember?) we'll never know for sure ...

Lindsey racing does this type of modification for their stage 1 intercoolers, but since we're on the wrong side of the pond, it proved more cost-effective to get it done locally. Here's the first version:

Just compare the end tanks. Sure, our version looks ugly, but it's also a lot bigger...

I volunteered my car as the test mule. Here's Pete making space for the modified cooler (had to get rid of one mounting bracket, and re-locate the other one)

Seems to fit in reasonably well...

And looks completely stock once everything is in place

Too bad we don't have any hard data on how it performs, but we did go for some open track driving yesterday and measured intercooler outlet pipe temperatures by (a very accurately tuned) hand every time a session ended (my car vs. Tommy's 951S)... surprise surprise, there really was a difference! Of course there are a lot of open variables like incoming air temp, driving style and so, but I'm confident that once we get to hook up some real temp sensors, we'll get positive results

It looks like a job well done (and worth doing).

Thanks

Very cool, Sami. Nice job.

Tim,
Is that the price for sending our IC to you?

How about testing the mod and putting some before and after temps on the board before evrybody starts throwing $200 around. It may help or hurt you, you never know.
Lindsey may do it a little different. They test and post numbers.
I'm not knocking your work Tim, I just don't want to waste money.

I expect the real benefit will be flow improvement, not cooling efficiency. If you then flow more hot air through the cooler, temperature may actually rise! To compare I guess you can measure the AFM output at given pressure and rpm.

Take a look at the Lindsey site. They list temp differences between the the 3 stages.

Stock temp is 251 temp out is 109. drop: -142

Stage 1 temp in is 268 and temp out is 98.5. drop is -169.5

Stage II temp in is 263 and temp out is 112. drop is -151.5

And they advertise that the stage V flows 75 cfm and drops temp by 40 degs over stock with Spearco core.

That's off there website.

I'm pretty sure there's no real gain with the stock turbo but gains will improve with a larger unit.

I'll post numbers here when we get some, but don't hold your breath since this is just a hobby after all ...

It's my IC Sami is testing right now. IC modification is only one part of the modifications there will be in our cars. There will be MAP kit, dual port WG, test pipe, upgraded turbos etc etc. I suppose all these together will give us a little bit benefit

I'm not sure how much of the flow restriction that end tank ends up causing. I'm inclined to think that the long internal passages for the intercooler is another significant cause of pressure drop.

On the otherhand, improving that end cap that's clearly more restrictive than it needs to be can't hurt, and you get to retain the stock look. It also looks like good work. I would be interested in some numbers as well, if you ever get around to that.

Good luck.

Our group (4 cars) would like to keep costs down, that's one of the main reasons we did this mod locally. When you buy parts for 4 cars you usually get good discounts. Our group also helps to avoid "down-time". My car will be back on the road again next summer, so my friends use my parts when their own are under work.
