Default antifreeze in oil....worth fixing?

alright, i have an oportunity to buy a '87 951 for $4500. It is in okay condition, but there is antifreeze in the oil. What does this generally mean, and is it worth it to fix the problem. Thanks in advance for your help!

Later,

Breck

Head gasket most likely. Probably looking at 250bucks for gaskets and maybe do belts too while it's apart. If you can do the work, it should be worth it, If not it'll be probably another 1000-1500, not sure, I do my own work, so I'm not farmiliar with the price to get it done.

Thanks!
Another question: What is entailed in fixing it, besides replacing the head gasket? Do I need to flushe the oil or anything else?

Thanks

Think about it - you have anti-freeze in your oil. You can't leave it like that - of course it will have to be flushed. If you have oil in your coolant/anti-freeze, that will have to be drained as well.

Removing the head to access the headgasket should not be that difficult. Maybe time consuming though. You should be pouring steam out of your exhaust like there's no tomorrow also, if you have a leaking HG.

Anohter issue with these cars is the oil cooler seal going kaput, which causes oil to mix in with the coolant. That is a fairly easy fix also.

Try using the search function, there are TONS of old topics on this kinda stuff.

BTW, $4500 for a 951 is a good deal, especially if a leaking HG or Oil Cooler is the only problem!! Have any pictures of the car?

It might be a good deal if the bores haven't been damaged (not sure what OK condition means), if that's the case it's probably not a good deal. There may be a lot of other problems that aren't apparent, so get a pre-purchase inspection by a garage that really knows these cars.

If the buyer won't agree, walk away. If you can't afford it, this isn't the right car for you.

I disagree.

It's probably the oil cooler housing gasket (where it connects to the block).

This is common, and will for sure result in oil/coolant mix, turning your oil milky brown.

A blown head gasket almost always results in coolant loss due to the cylinder pressures pushing out, and into the coolant passages between the block and the head.

Either way, see if you can get the price down by another 1K at least. That leaves room in case of other more drastic things.
