Default JE 3.0 pistons

Concerns over refinishing Alusil bores locally have influenced me to fit ductile iron dry liners for my 3.0 build. JE pistons are a possibility, so is there a JE part no. for - 104mm, 4032, 2.7 head, S2 crank, original spec rod, 8-1 comp pistons ?

I was hoping for a part no. for the spec I mentioned, JE must have made these a few times ? What's the real benefit of the coatings ?

Dry sleeves, the machine shop I'm going to use does this a lot and they mentioned 3 sleeve manufacturers they can use.

Hi, looking at the Je spec sheet for mine it mentions Piston Part # 261911. If you can get me your email I will scan the spec sheet over to you . These are for uncoated 3 litre turbo pistons in steel bore.
i also have the Je piston spec for 104.5mm coated but this is with my engineer as he is redoing the alusil bores at the moment, but can source it within the week if needed.

Gee I've heard polarised opinions on JE's. I know Jon Mitchell rates them but I've heard other well respected builders blag them. From recent experience with another brand perhaps they've got a few different forgings and JMG has access to the better ones? Not sure who you're dealing with but perhaps a call to JMG might be worth it?

My engine has ductile iron sleeves with JE pistons and there is a lot of piston slap on a cold engine, and still present on idle. My piston to wall clearance is a little on the larger side. If you don't mind that they seems to be popular with the high power engine builder. Not sure how it is different from all the other piston makers, but has worked well for meg. While comparing my Wössner pistons with JE, the Wössner where lighter and had smaller rings than the JE. Other than that there where no obvious differences to me.

The only negatives I've read about JE's have been relative to their Alusil spec coating, have there been other issues ? I've read about 2618 pistons knocking but I thought 4032 pistons run less clearance and are quieter ? I would prefer Wossners but their customer service seems to be non existant. Jon Mitchell has a couple of engines in progress and said I could get a set when he orders his JE's, but my spec is slightly different.

I spoke to a UK JE dealer and asked if they could supply the pistons, JE have told them they didn't know the spec and want an extra $100 to design them. Wossners at the same price seem favourite now.

Sorry, didn't reply.

What previous people said to me was they didn't like the basic design of the JE blanks. Too big, heavy. They didn't like the clearances needed either. This was when used with ductile iron MID sleeves. We went through 5 motors where the pistons nipped up in the bores due to different expansion rates. I'm not entirely sure if the people that put our sleeves in did this process correctly therefore I can't lay total blame on the pistons.

So if Jon is happy to work with JE and has had good experience I would discuss this with him and see what he has to say.

Wossner will work directly with you/builder, but will demand you provide exact bore sizing, bore material, rod manufacturer/sizing etc. A friend who purchased my Blue 89 951 used JE pistons on a 3.0 motor and the cold start up sounded awful. The motor had ring blow within 18K miles. The motor was rebuilt here in Tucson with Wossner pistons/rings and still kicking *** in LA with meth injection running 24psi.

I also learned the hard way with JE's on a motor. May just be our motors, building expertise using their expansion rates, etc. but I'm never going back. Current motor has Wossner pistons in NiCom bores.

I have spoken to him about pistons and liners but he uses Capricorn engineering and they don't seem to be taking on new customers. I'd like to use plated bores like George mentioned but that's not an option in the UK. The 2.7 block I have has unmarked bores, I'm taking it to be checked for ovality/taper and if it's OK I'll just have it cleaned up with the Sunnen pads and paste and use it with a set of Wossners.
