The turbo S head was based more on a 2.7 head but with similar mods as the 951 head. It has round intake ports, ceramic liners in the exhaust ports and has special thin valve stems. Compared to a 2.7 head, it is restrictive and doesn't allow much to modify the exhaust side.
Porsche was limited to how much hp the engine could make, so they designed the head for maximum torque.

Are the 968 Turbo S inlet valves and ports 2.7 or 2.5 sizes ?

Now use the exact same engine with the ~K27/11 from the 968TRS and a bit more boost will provide much better performance and a broader powerband. When my buddy lets me drive his I am able to spin the rears in 3rd gear, and that is with the wide original 18" Speedlines with decent tires.
The car makes near 400hp in a very usable manner and considering it uses the restrictive original air box that is not short of impressive IMO.
sounds like a nice "square" engine, about 400tq/400hp from 3.0 turbo, not highly stressed but a good meaty powerband that doesn't fall off at the high end.

Does his car have an AFM to the 951 airbox or a 968 MAF? Bumping up in size to a Rogue S/S2 sized MAF housing (same rectangular opening size as the 951 AFM) would be a nice upgrade to the AFM and would still appear stock with the airbox on top, but would free up the top end power even more.

It's running a Bosch MAP sensor steering the Bosch Motronic. The AFM is replaced with a 3" rubber elbow with adapters between the air box and the compressor inlet, but the air box is unmodified with its rectangular outlet.

Yes, it feels like a 400/400 engine. Pretty much all one would want from a 3.0 8V this side of the factory original feel/polish.

The turbo S head core is a 951 head with a different coolant channel to suit the 104mm block. Only other differences as Raj said is valve stem sizes, down from 9 to 7mm, and smaller outlet ports.

Hopefully, I will be able to post some side by side comparisons of the 2 heads soon.
A 3.0 liter engine is a beast with tons of potential. With low boost levels, it makes 400/400 all day and pulls hard like an NA.
I decided to go with a stealth MAF setup which replaces the stock AFM. Looks like an AFM to the naked eye but allows the use of factory airbox and snorkel which is fed directly by drivers side naca duct. I will post some pics. Very stealth.

Should be the same as 2.5. I will have both soon to compare.

The ports on the 2.7 head are truly enormous and the intake valve dwarfs the exhaust valve. Just looking into the port you can see part of why the head flows so well, such a direct path you can see the entire valve head.

Still looks on track for Friday delivery

There is a 968 turbo s here local that dyno at the same place I did. You're spot on with the 400 400 figure. I took a pic of the dyno he did prior to my dyno on my 2.85 a couple years ago. For an older setup, it was quite impressive. I'll try to find the pic.

Sounds like the design of the port/valve was overkill for a NA 2.7 engine.....

Not really , seems inline for an NA engine, for a turbo you want them closer ....
