Under control that's why i'm not to stressed about it. Hopefully rip into some of it tonight.

IMO, for head work, your biggest benefit is lower boost for similar power. if you have a custom cam, you can achieve a better torque curve (more flatter) I don't really see many touching the exhaust ports though. just the intake.

pulled the cam tower off to have a look at the valve retainers and springs.
Springs look good.
Retainers are intact (thankfully they're titanium!!)

Dont mind the coolant, that happened while bleeding!

Here you can see the springs, retainers ect (i didn't realise the photo was blurry!)

Here you can see that the intake valves are stuck in (probably hitting against the head)

And here you can see the intake valves are not closed

That really sucks! If it is any consolation an 8V head is much less work than my 16V head...

While having the head off why not take the time to make everything easier to service? Install a vacuum station, then you can clean up the vacuum line mess. I replaced my exhausts studs with bolts and the studs fit perfectly for the intake

Pauly, are you considering a new head or are you going to rebuilt that one?

Louis,
this one will be getting rebuilt.
It's been built by Dave @ CEP. larger intake valves, Titanium retainers, the works. It's been quite heavily ported also. It would be a waste if i ditched this head.

I may not even need valve guides, the valve stems look straight from inspection, i think the valves are just bent and hitting the head.

Paully, nothing to add, just wanted to say, I'm sorry this happened to ya. Good luck with the rebuild. I foresee many beers in your future.

Elliot, Nothing to add really, we all know the problem!!!
Oh the fridge is full, let's not worry about that.

Tomorrow will need to get the car on blocks. Don't have jack stands. so going to do what i did last time (works really well) and jack the car up onto some wooden blocks and put stoppers on the rear so it doesn't roll.

I'm going to try remove the head attached to the exhaust manifold.

If you can, that is definitely the best way to remove the head. I've done it both ways. FWIW, I'm doing even more work on mine beginning today, so I feel your pain! My fridge is full as well!

Might crack one open. I've got the car on blocks (don't have stands) but it's not high enough!! I've drained some coolant (not all, what for..)

now i cannot fit under the car.. great. if i can undo the exhaust collector flange. The head will come off.

Got it!!

4 bent valves. 4 slightly marked cylinders.

Slightly marked, i'm just going to smooth them out with the dremel and be done with it. replace 4 valves. make sure they're seating. done.

Going to replace the heater valve while i'm there. Noticed some leaking around the join. a couple of hoses will get replaced while i'm there.

Gasket kit (i think it's cheaper getting a new kit then a few bits. & nothing wrong with spares!!)

Pistons will be fine if you just clean em up as you said, looks like you got lucky and only bent the intake valves. You should be up and running in no time.

Only problem is, they're custom!! I actually can wait to fix it. Taking my time with it. probably an hour work every day. Taking care of the 2 leaks i had. cleaning up all the coolant that went everywhere.

Check you valve stem size - there are not many vendors (pretty much none) that make Valves in the same diameter as stock. Ferrea can't supply them. You may have custom valve guides - that's the common way to fit other valves.

BTW - that's a lot of carbon build up for a 'performance' engine - normally that's a sign of bad guides but I would guess that your head is not that old.

I'll be measuring when i pull the valves. one of these days. They're oversize valves, not sure how much bigger. But Dave will be ordering them for me. He knows what ones he used.

The head has been in use for a year now. There's more carbon on the cylinders then the head. It's like a fine later of carbon on the head. comes off when you wipe it with your finger
How would bad guides cause carbon?
