the 'soft' carbon (basically soot) the you can wipe off is usually from a rich mixture. The 'hard' carbon - like the stuff on your piston crowns is from burning oil.
The soft carbon is fairly harmless but the hard carbon is the stuff the can score cylinders if it breaks loose.
Valve guides are famous for wearing on a 951 that sees higher revs than normal.

Slightly marked, i'm just going to smooth them out with the dremel and be done with it. replace 4 valves. make sure they're seating. done.

Going to replace the heater valve while i'm there. Noticed some leaking around the join. a couple of hoses will get replaced while i'm there.

Gasket kit (i think it's cheaper getting a new kit then a few bits. & nothing wrong with spares!!)

Seems weird how the piston to valve clash marks are so wide apart??? Something looks odd to me...

That's because the valves get a little more bent each time the hit the pistons. the engine stopped after 3 or 4 hits. If it had been at a lot higher rpm there would have been a lot more carnage.

Chris: Makes perfect sense. There's oil going through the intake, i have a feeling the catch can isn't catching much oil, but water!! I'll have a look.

Patrick: Exactly what Chris said, each time i gets hit it bends more. This was at idling speed under 600 rpm most likely as it happened while shut off.

I think i'll need to modify my oil catch can.

I've heard of steel wool inside them?

Pauly ideally your not supposed to have anything your catch can..... Could it be the way you are routing your catch can?

I made a custom one. i have a baffle in it (it's more like a plate so the oil doesn't splash into the other hole), It just doesn't catch the oil.

I've done some reading and been stated on my catchcan thread too. that steel wool helps catching oil vapours.

Stock valve(right) next to custom valve (left)

My valve size:

The retaining clips are different than the stock ones too. and the stems are slightly thinner.

Small update. I received my valves today. took my head to get new guides, valves seated ect. Should be running by the weekend!

If anyone is curious on the brand, They're Manley valves. Custom made too which is why it took long to get.
