Default High performance clutches

Hi all,

As many already know i'm building a big hp 3.0 16v Turbo. I've been talking to a lot of guys about a clutch but i still don't know what the best (or one of the best) option is!

As i have the S2 flywheel i'm not able to get the Turbo clutch so i'm searching for an option.

Who has any idea about what to do?

Greetz,
Bas

I have a Spec clutch (stage 3+). It's not bad. it chatters but not much. it's holding my power pretty well too. Takes abuse.

The S2 flywheel makes it problematic. I'm using a Spec Stage 4 clutch with my S2 fw but it doesn't hold enough. The pressure plate is too weak for high power above ~550 hp.

So a custom made clutch is the only solution if you want to keep using the S2 fw.

So the clutch disk is not really the problem but the PP is.. are there no special aftermarket PP's?

And using the S2 flywheel would be my preference as it has the 60-2 setup. Else i will have to get a turbo flywheel and make a special ring with the 60-2 setup for that flywheel..

KEP doesn't offer a PP for the S2 unfortunately. I took my clutch to a clutch specialist and he said the Spec PP was probably already modified. There's no upgraded PP from Sachs available either.

As far as i know Specs PP is the same as sachs. Well it is a Sachs PP. I have the semi aluminium one. I thin their fully aluminium one has more clamping load then the standard one.

You could get ahold of Southbend, or Dave with FRF.

Either should be able to rework the PP and reline your disc. Personally, I'd go with a 6 puck feramic disc.

I've used this combo for over 500lb ft and 100s of hard launches.

Pauly, the offering for the S2 flywheel is not the same as for the turbo. There is no aluminium PP available for it. The Spec PP is made by Sachs but likely a bit modified.

I use clutchnet discs. Lots of options and good prices. the 6 puck bronze is a bit much for the street, but great once the car is moving.

Call the guys at KEP. They probably make a clutch that can take anything you throw at it.

Bas, if you're going to use an aftermarket ECU you could go back to a Turbo setup and run a front trigger wheel like the Clewitt. Not ideal but will give you more clutch options. Or, get a custom 60-2 flywheel made up so you can run the turbo setup AND have better resolution for the ECU. Also as Sid mentions, Southbend are a good company to deal with. I'd forgotten about them in that email. Stupid me. I'd look at an alternative to the S2 flywheel.

If you are going to an after market ECU run it off your cam gear. I will send you how mine is set up if you want. This will allow you to go to a light weight aluminum fly wheel. Having your sensors on your cam make them easier to get at and not prone to track debris.

So basically i should go with sensors at a different place and get a turboflywheel and place a good clutch on there.. But what kind of clutch should i get than.. There are so many options above, i don't know which I should take. I've heard good stories about Southbend and FRF but the website of FRF is down at the moment.

I already had contact with Dave Novak and he told me he could get a clutchdisk repacked with feramic material and rework the PP so it would be able to hold 650HP. If that would be the case i don't have to do anything about the Flywheel but i can just use the S2 version!

You can run sensors on both crank and cam. Some ECU's are more sensitive than others and require a cleaner signal to avoid corruption.
