I'm doing the same; i'm getting the oil from the return of the oil cooler without a restrictor in it (journal bearing turbo)

Further; when you want to undo the covers on the windage ports, heat them up pretty good or try to tighten/loosen them turn by turn, in my block i had one broken off.. (because of the huge amount of loctite in there) Luckily the engine builder had a huge set of tools to remove the piece left in the block!

Could this have been introduced a certain year as an improvement? This should mean that early S2 blocks shouldn't have them either?

Anyway, how important are they and should I throw away my block now?
I've just pulled the sump off my 2.7 engine and it has the windage ports , I'd say the ports are important enough to either have them machined into your block or source another block with them.

All 104mm block have siamesed cylinders and raised deck.

Not sure, but it could be that the caps were added in order to avoid oil splashing all the way up around cylinder walls considering that the deck is higher.

Would be interesting to know both block numbers.
blade7's is probably higher than Peedster's.

All S2 blocks i have seen have had those covers bolted on at the top of crank case. What come to left balanceshaft cover, some S2 covers seems to have a plug and some a place where to drill and tap.
968 crank is lighter than S2 one, several KG's. What comes to oli squirters, they can be easily added also to S2 block.

You seem to have all the same plastic parts as i have

Jeez, I edited my posts because you were getting your knickers in such a twist. I exercise my right to express an opinion that doesn't match yours, on an open forum, and according to you I'm trolling.

The same variance can be seen on different 2.7 blocks.

By how much? The few 3L cranks I have weighed were all the same ~25kg, S2 or 968.

Can someone point out the covers that you're discussing?
Does my block have these based on the pictures?

I have a 968 crank in my DD that I will weigh.

.
Your block does appear to have the covers/plates, they are bolted into the block at the bottom of the cylinders.

These are the covers to what the Porsche manual refers to as the " centrifugal oil compartment". Still don't know what the purpose is...and if it necessary to remove for block cleaning.

Please see this thread about cleaning under those covers. In short, pull them off and clean under them, or else...
