Default Who is still using Weltmeister chips?

I recently obtained some Weltmeister chips for my 1987 951 for cheap (yes, I know they are old school). My question is this, do they require any other mods to use them? I have read conflicting info, after doing a search (here and elsewhere). Do I have to go to a 3 bar fpr or do I have to shim the wastegate? I have a completely stock car. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge or literature on it? I do not want to risk hurting my engine. I plan to keep the car stock other then these, and maybe exhaust.

Finally, is this a waste of time and should I not install them at all

I would run a 3 bar FPR if it were my car, but I dont know that its REQUIRED per say. You'll know if its too rich, and better on the rich side than on the lean.

The Welt chips were some of the better early chips.
Run a 3bar regulator (or adjustable), you do not have to shim the wastegate (but it probably wouldn't hurt).

Joshua as always is a huge asset to our community.

Even though he sells newer tuning solutions, he is still offering helpful info regarding other tuning solutions.

Hats off to you!!

They came in various forms over the years. I bought a set in the late 90's from Automotion, and they came with a wastegate shim and used the stock fuel pressure. Looking for a quicker fix, I exchanged them for Autothority chips that relied on the easier to install banjo bolt. It's kind of tuning roulette to install chips without knowing what they are tuned for... If they have a version or serial number on them, you might try calling Automotion and see if they can tell you for sure. Having said that, chips are indeed worth installing -- they remain the best bang for the buck out there for a bone stock 951. If you can't confirm what you have, there are plenty of good, reasonably priced chips available these days...

Wow, thanks for wealth of info! I planned originally to go with newer chips, but did not want to go thru the 24 to 28 pin conversion that most seem to required. This may be a dumb questions, but here goes, if the chips do not need a 3 bar fpr and I install one to be safe, will it hurt anything or make the car run poorly?

For another data point, when I bought my '89, it had Welt chips installed, along w/ a 3 bar FPR and wastegate shim.

My '86 had the Welt chips in it as well. Didn't come w the 3 bar FPR, but did come w the shimmed wastegate. Have since updgraded, and have the wastegate sitting in the garage. Certainly willing to part with it if you happen to be interested in another component of your upgrade...

My '86 came with Welt chips, it also had a shimmed WG and stock FPR.

If you don't know for sure whether your chipset requires a 3bar FPR or not... well... it's certainly safer to run a 3bar when not required, then to run the stock one when a 3bar IS required.

We used to sell them. The 86-88 non S Turbo's used the chips and the wastegate shim. The Turbo S used the chips, shim and 3.0 FPR. They were tough to sell vs. the Autothority chips of the time...if nothing else because shimming the wastegate is a PITA whereas the Autothority bleeder valve thing was piece of cake.

The welt chips were written by DINAN Engineering, The TC-8200 is the 24 pin for 86-87, Cut a slot in the shim so you can get it in without taking the valve out. The rev limit was moved to 6800 and over boost is 15.97 lbs. Look at column to the right in the pic . It’s an off the shelf chip so it’s very conservative. Mine worked great boost was around 14.5. There is nothing wrong with them. There is nothing wrong with "old school" A lot of old shool was better...I know because I'm old school and so is this car.

This is what my 86 did with Weltmeister chip with the banjo bolt.

I included the pic because Rennlist is almost useless because of all the miss information.
If you ever get a set of Huntley branded chips, take a look in the same place....
