Default Finally got the 3.0 turbo right!

Well the dyno session is complete at the results are in...

The car ran faultlessly with rock solid intake temps never rising under boost and coolant temps were good as well. Really pleased with the way it has all come together, the custom front mount IC I designed has paid off as it is totally unfazed by anything I throw at it.

The results

401hp and just under 420lbft torque.

I have images of the dyno charts I will post shortly.

We spent lots of time on the drive ability doing road mapping after and also going the idle right which has bothered me for ages. I am now able to say that the car now runs like a factory car. You can drive it down to the shops and never know any different it's just like a standard 968 off boost, but wind it up and it takes off like a scalded cat! Very pleasing to drive.

I have Thoms old turbo installed - he went to GT30 as some of you will know. I didnt need the extra fab work for now, just wanted to get the car running so the bolt on option was good for me. I took off the old Vitesse Stage V (an old version), nothing against this turbo, it was great in the top end but just to laggy for the 968 box as the gears are shorter and it just doesnt get a chance to load up, at least it didnt on my car. Thoms turbo is much faster spooling and the car really comes alive with it on, there is a price to pay on the top end but I am happy with the figures. It is a street car and the low down torque combined with the 968 box works really well.

Thanks to those friends who have been through this with me for a while and helped with the r&d on these 3.0 conversions. Patrick, Thom, Duke & Tom in particular but the wealth of knowledge in these forums has in no small part helped me to complete this build. My car is as much 951 as it is 968 so it deserves a post here!

That engine bay looks a whole lot tidier since I last saw it

Finally it looks like there are a couple of UK 3L cars coming to fruition, well done!

Congratulations Nick. The charts look good!
A lot has changed in turbos over the last 8-9 years, now start driving and really enjoying the car.

Thanks John. This is not a new turbo though, it was out together not much later than my old turbo. I know your new stage v performs a lot better though and agree things have moved on a lot. This turbo came up at the right time and was a good halfway point for me for now until I find the final solution that will hopefully give me the best of both worlds with less compromise.

Congrats Nick! Great to see all bits and pieces coming together with nice results!
As much as I enjoy over the top monster cars that hardly can idle right - a nice 951 or 968 with a refined turbo package with enough power and a civilized manner is just perfect for the street. Great job!

Oh and I would rate those 401 bhp as similar to 401 rwhp Dynojet.

Nick, that's great news after such a long and at times frustrating process. Congratulations for seeing through especially with all the other 'stuff' you've been dealing with. Dyno Dynamics tend to be pretty conservative compared to some other brands and going off the curves you have, the car looks very nice to drive with plenty of early torque and a very smooth hp curve. Plus this is all at modest boost levels. Looks like you will have many years of really satisfying motoring ahead and also plenty more power to be gained should you wind the wick up! Great to see. :-)

Thanks Duke, its great to have something that works well as a package at last. It is a great base to move forward from. I still have my 16v 968 head saved for a rainy day This summer though its time to use the car

Thanks Pat This year is my year to make things happen and its going well so far! We ran the car with 1.2 bar to redline but it made no more power than at 1 bar. I think we are at the limit of the turbo as we always knew this turbo was about midrange. There may be some more to come from the ignition curve but again we kept it in the safe zone as no need to be greedy, 400hp is a nice level for the street and the torque is plenty. There is some pretty heavy flutter from the forge diverter valve at mid throttle lift off around 10 psi and at light throttle openings. I need to take a closed look at the diverter valve and also am looking at giving it its own vacuum feed. In the end we dialed the boost back at the top end of the rev range (0.9 bar) as it was making no power so no reason to stress the engine for no gain. A little more advance in the midrange and we managed to hit the 401 figure. There was more on the table but we left it there for now so I can live with it for a while and see what the next step is.

Dang. That doesn't seem to be a ton of power for what work is needed to get a 3.0 turbo going.

Is this turbo meant more for midrange response?

Is this a ball bearing turbo?
