Default Broken Block

This happened a few months ago. We've got a new motor running, but thought I'd share this unfortunate picture. No piston damage. This happened on the tuning dyno.

Anyone ever seen anything resembling this type of break?

Looks like a candidate for a Darton MID sleeve.

Seen pics of 996 blocks like that, never heard of a 944 doing it.

I've seen reports of a few 951 engines splitting the bore tower, but this is the first time hearing about it happening to a 968 block.

Sorry to hear about this George. Glad to hear you are back up and running. What CR was that build? Any signs of detonation?

I think they call it the "D Chunk" for the 996's

I never seen that on a 968-944 engine

Wow!

Would something like this be more likely with ARP head studs and MLS head gasket? Just trying to learn here.

Not a very big sample size of motors running 540hp@23psi! No expert here but my guess is that this failure is related to very high peak cylinder pressures.

i have a fully operational 3.0 968 engine available. engine pulls strong, and you can test drive it in the car.

location; Eric Hill's shop in Alvarado, TX where the 968 is getting a V8.

engine used 1 quart of 0w50 in 8 k miles of recent driving. needs fresh belts and H20 pump. comes with new long life Gates belts ready for install. does not need full variocam service at this time, but, it wouldn't be a bad idea to do the headgasket as there was a headgasket issue about 18 k miles ago [that has not since returned]. it also would be a good idea to replace the oil pick-up tube and do the rod bearings.

good for dd or turbo build. price includes full wiring harness.

$1,800 plus shipping.

George, I may be interested in that block if you are gonna get rid of it. I'm going to do a different type of sleeve for my big engine, and this would work for it.
