Interesting my new 103mm Cometic is different at the coolant ear than the last one I received from LR. On the 2.85L I had a leak here. Going to call Dave tomorrow at LR and discuss.

New Cometic HG:

Old Cometic HG:

Update: Dave at LR could not explain why the gaskets were different. He is looking into it. I am pretty sure the Cometic I bought a few months ago is an old design that is known to leak at the coolant ear. It was redesigned a few years ago to eliminate the problem but somehow I think I got an old one.

Off the shelf. The pistons shown are these:

On the 2.85L I used these:

Notice the difference in pin height and inverted dome volume. If I build another 2.85L I think I will use a -16cc inverted dome like Sid did so that it would be a zero interference design.

This table was helpful in making decisions: http://www.jepistons.com/Catalogs/SR...0-400_inv.aspx

Good work! Spiral locks are a pain. Got any pointers?

Any idea what JE would charge for that piston with a Mitsubishi pin in it?

What happened to your old crank, I know you said you had some issues with it?

When I did the tear down I found an issue with the thrust bearing front surface. It turns out that when the mains were turned the thrust surface on the crank were trued but not polished. This lack of polishing resulted in damage to the front thrust surface of the crank. Below is a picture of the back side crank thrust surface. This surface shows the lack of polishing. When the clutch is engaged, the crank is pulled back against the front thrust surface. If the crank thrust surface is not properly polished, the grind marks act like wipers destroying the oil layer. This results in metal to metal contact. If properly polished, no grind marks should be visible.

Overall, I learned a great deal during the 2.85L build. On a stroker crank, I would make sure the crank is checked for straightness after the off-set grind and also check the thrust surfaces especially if the mains were turned. This should be done in addition to the normal stuff such as plasti-gauge measurements to check oil clearance on the rod and main journals.

Not sure, but pretty easy to modify the Eagle rods to take the 0.927" SBC pin.
