Default fan issues...am i going in the right direction?

So I've done the research and using the clarks-garage testing of the relay hooked up to the Rad I have determined that low speed works when ac is on, high speed works when jumped. It looks like the next step is the slow speed resistors. I have an 88' turbo so i would assume from what I have read they are on the passenger side next to the battery in the engine bay? is this correct?

secondly, if the wires are crappy I replace them and in theory it should work, correct?

lastly, if those wires look good.. what should i check next?

Thanks for your help. I hate hunting this stuff down and your help is appreciated.

I am probably wrong but after doing similar testing I figured my problem was the thermo fan switch in the radiator. From reading clarks I thought only pre 85.5 cars had resistors ? Did you do jumper lead test for low speed fans too ?

cyberpunky - I did exactly what clarks garage told me to do. I jumped slow and fast, turned key on, turned a/c on and off. Everything worked. It's gotta be what techno duck posted but I just didn't know where they were or what I was looking at.

My car will idle until the second white mark and as soon as the high speed fans turn on it drops to just above the first white marker. So if I can get that slow speed up and running..I should be good.

Just reread your post, if the slow speed fans kick on with the a/c, i dont think the resistors are your problem. The fans will not come on at slow speed without those resistors.

Try jumping the pins on the connector (Clarks has a good diagram for this). If the fans kick on with the right pins jumped that rules out the resistors and points towards the fan switch.

To answer your other question, i think the rad fan resistors are behind the glove box on the '86 models.

Edit - To test the fan switch you want to do this procedure from clarks, Testing Fan Relay

http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-ma...#laterelaytest

Basically if your slow / high speed fans come on with the different pins jumped i bet the fan switch in the radiator is bad.

your right..I didn't think about that. I did do the relay test and both work when jumped...slow speed does come on when I hit the a/c and both stay on when the key is turned on. I have a new fan switch that's 10 degree's cooler. I'll put that in before new wires and see where I'm at.

Alright so I put in the sensor for the fan that goes in the rad. but that didn't fix the problem, I still only have the high fan speed. I think the next step would be the resistors? Would that be the next step?

Thanks in advance.

I just deleted the resistors and wire-nutted the wires together. I don't need no steenkin' low speed fans down here in SoCal, not sure how that would work up where you are.

Well when I'm at a stop light or something the temp will go up the the 2nd white mark and fans will kick on and it will drop down to just above the first.. I'd like it to stay at the first if I can

If you followed the procedure from Clarks that Jon referenced above (jump terminals 2-3) and your low speed fans did not come on, the relay is bad. If the fans work at low speed at any time, the resistors are fine.

Get a local lister to let you borrow a relay for a quick drive and test this diagnosis.

Well the relay worked...I followed clarks garage and everything worked so I thought it was the temp sensor. Installed a new one..still didn't work. So it's got to be the wires to the resistors.
