Default buying a block without balance shaft covers?

I have read mixed thoughts on buying 944 blocks without balance shaft covers. I am in need of a block for my newest project and have located a block near me but he doesnt have the balance shaft covers. Will the ones on my motor most likely work? Can anyone give me some insight. anyone else have a late 944 turbo block?
thanks

I always thought the balance shaft covers/block on the early cars were line bored at the factory; the covers were therefore integral with the block and not interchangeable. I can't vouch for the later blocks though. Personally I would pass on any block without the covers unless you are doing a BS delete for track use.

Not too hard to fix. Broach down the covers you have, have it assembled, then line bored. The problem is the same with anything that was line bored while bolted together - block and girdle, main caps, rods, etc.

If the old BS covers/new block are lined bored wouldn't they be a bit oversize and he would have to then build up the bearing area on the BS themselves and have them machined down to match the new bores? I realize there's no real load on them but line boring a 2nd time would likely result in a larger bore than OE spec. Maybe I'm missing something here, it wouldn't be the first time

That's why I said you broach the covers. Just like remanning a con rod. You make it egg shaped, then rebore it.

As cheap and plentiful as 944 motors are I would find one with the matching BS covers. Unless you're going to send it off for machining anyway, in that case it's just another line on the bill.

Or or balanced and lightened rotating assembly and then BS delete! I like spending other peoples money!

Take a look at Sid's build. I believe he plugged the lower feed, tapped the upper for the turbo feed, and then filled in the oil drains.

To the OP: Will you run balance shafts on your build?
