I do mine with the pump from Griots all the time. It's awesome. 5 minute job and very easy and clean.

I disagree. Oil suspends particles. The pump from the top is a factory Mercedes technique.
Personally, I would never use one of those "suck from the top" oil change devices. There are particles suspended in that liquid that I just don't see a vacuum pulling adequately out of the sump.
The only oil change for me is getting the car hot, draining it from the plug, replacing the filter, then filling the car back up.

I purchased this many moons ago for my race 951 and found that while the threads were perfect, the external wrench lands interfered with the oil pan and wouldn't allow the male end to seat far enough into the drain. Have they been redesigned to allow it to fit without mods now?
I do have this very system on my Exploder and love the significant decrease in oil mess, but it is very slow draining...

Its not fast but I always drain when the oil is hot and I usually raise one wheel higher so its got a bit of an angle to help it at the end.

I guess that explains why the sound wrap on the oil pan of ours was clean until I changed the oil.
You are right about oil suspending the particles. I'm almost inclined to do a chagne with a pump, then pul teh drain plug to see how much it misses.

That would be interesting, but there will be hardly anything left. It sucks like a ***** at the end and you can move the pickup tube around to make sure you don't miss anything.

With the baffle in the pan you are not going to get all of the oil. Certainly not the heavier particles that are on the bottom.
With all of the oil related problems these cars have, IMO, you are just looking for trouble. Good luck.

chris, there's an oil filter. if there are big chunks on the bottom they're not going to come through the drain either. mercedes has been doing this for years. it works... next change i do i'll pull the plug after and make a video of the two drops that come out when i pull the plug.

A filter? lol Yeah I kinda am aware of that. It's not anything big that would be the concern since it won't get past the pickup. It's the smaller metallic material that is the concern.
Again, there is the baffle. You're not going to get all the oil.
I have "some" experience with Porsche cars. lol

In fact, any 112 or 113 engine with scratch marks on the cylinder walls has to be changed by mercedes under warranty (they werent using mobil 1 extended life oil for their outrageously long service intervals )
They may have learned how to do it over the past couple of years, just saying theyre not the best company to use as an example.
A pump is mandatory on many new euros, many of them are coming out without drain plugs
To the OP, a pump will work, but you most likely wont get all of the oil out. Im one of those crazies that actually loosens the lower oil cooler line on my 951 to get the oil from the cooler as well, but most here wont do that

Thanks for your opinions, but with all due respect the intent of my question was to see if anyone has used the "from the top" form of oil change, not debate weather dealing with ramps, jack stands, etc is a PITA.
A simple "I have no experience with this technique and can't offer any meaningful advice " would have been a more appropriate response.
Don't think I purchased the wrong car - just think I got responses (with the exception of one((thanks)) from the wrong audience.

Oil change philosophy aside this is an AWESOME item to have in your shop. We use it to pull fluid out of diffs, transmissions, etc that don't have drain plugs (like a Ford 9" rear.) it's also the most overkill one-man brake bleeder ever built.
