Finger prints... well that's definitely a 'tell'!

Not defensive, but definitely keen to explain that digits to the right of an 8 or a 9 sitting 'high in the saddle' are perfectly normal, and do not indicate meddling.

Just thinking for a moment, all my cars since the 1980's have been VW/Audi/Porsche, and I've had to work on several that had odometer issues... The Mk1 for example had the plastic 'press-on' cog which expands when it's warm, meaning that odometer works in the morning when it's cold (after an evening in the garage), but doesn't work in the evening after the car's been sitting in the sunshine all day, with the interior heating up. (the cog expands, and 'slips' on the shaft which it's supposed to turn. -Took me ages to figure it out, then ten cent's worth of loctite blue fixed it forever)

But watching them turn over, it becomes clear to see how they 'nudge' the digit to their left before and after the roll over.

I need less caffeine!

I'd agree when the 9 is in place the digit to the left will start to rise, not so sure about that happening with the 8. My first post was baiting the swim a little, a lot of little fishes were soon in the net .

It definitely begins its slight 'creep' at eight.

The white 'gears' which freely rotate on the secondary polished shaft along the front (and down below the 'window') has two different sets of 'paddles' on it. -One is a full 'cog' which turns the teeth on the gear of the 'prayer wheel' to the left (having a full set of 'cog teeth) and the other side has (usually three) 'paddles' which "catch" the single "bump" from the wheel to the right.

It's an 'escapement mechanism' a little like a clock... The way it all works is that the 'button' (think of it like the bump of a cam) falls between two of the three 'paddles'. As it passes through 'zero', it pushes the button through the 'centre' of the escapement, and turns the wheel by a defined amount (36 degrees, or one-tenth of a revolution). Having passed through the escapement, it then exerts no further 'drive' on the white idler wheel, and keeps 'counting' without turning the digit to its left.

I don't know why VDO aren't made with the same level of precision which other mechanical counters, but I thnk what happens is that when you get to number [8], the button is just ever-so-slightly making contact with the first paddle. At [9] it enters the escapement, at [0] it REMAINS in the escapement and turns the next wheel with it. At [1] it leaves the escapement, but continues to turn the neighbouring dial the final 'creep'.

If I get a 180MPH speedo from Lart, I'll strip it down and show how all the magic happens!

Paging Lart!

As for 'baiting the swim', I just want to see this car go to a good home. -there aren't ALL that many low-mileage garage queens left these days. -Fewer every day.

Is this even enough for you oh Master of the 944 odometer kingdom That darn pesky 3 seems to be wanting to rise for some manipulative reason.

Damn... That photo shows -if nothing else- the sheer lack of scratches on the clear Lexan (or whate ver the clear plastic is) cover...

That's a detail that NOBODY would think about faking.

Close up with an Iphone while sitting at a stoplight in the left turn lane (notice the turn signal is illuminated)...isn't it awful late for you to be posting, like 3AM where you are?
