you've done a great job! I will be reviewing it in entirety as time allows, but let me be the first to shake your hand, so to speak.
Good info there for us Porsche hot-rodders as well.

Audi's actually. The 944 engine is of porsche design completely. (half of a 928 engine) Though there are many parts that were interchangable. Many car makers still do this but you don't see people calling chevys chryslers now do you?

not a flame, - his opinion. you posted yours, he posted his.
Buick, Chevy, Pontiac , etc. is a good example of his position.
British Leyland companies is another. Doesn't necessarily make Austin-Healy an MG, does it?
etc., etc.

Let's recap. You give us some information about how you can put porsche parts on a VW. (that is fine, i have no problem with that) then you come in and tell everyone in here with there car's pride that the car is a VW. The truth of the matter is that the 924 car was intended to be an AUDI. Does audi use parts made for all three cars? Yes. Does that make them VW exclusively? No. I'm not flaming but you have good info for your car that is not of direct usefulness to us who have these put on our cars from the get go. Then tell us that our cars are made by VW. Just think about what it is you are trying to do. It gives me the impression that you want us to contend this subject with you. Please go and read the history about the origin on the 924. This is where you will find that there are some parts mutually used by VW. The majority was of Audi design. 944 was a spin off of the 924 GT and has a PORSCHE powerplant. porsche designed it and made it. the tranny is still a mutually used part though. I know that the Audi and VW used this tranny so... that doesn't make them VW.
If a part is used in more that one car maker it doesn't necesarily mean that the car is of one specific brand.
Now, we can all decide what to call our cars but as for me I am satisfied to know that my car is not a VW or AUDI. (87 951)

Andrew, why do you say that the 924 was intended to be an AUDI? I have never heard this. All I have ever read is that VW paid Porsche to design the 924 (Porsche Project code ?477?). VW backed out because they could not produce the car and sell it in the VW price range. Porsche decided to produce it as the 924 (with a few changes).
Now, the 924 uses an Audi block with an aluminum Porsche head and a lot of other Porsche parts. Saying that the engine is an Audi engine is unfair since the new head completely transformed the engine. Note: The same block was also used in an AMC truck, so what?
Now, in the begining the 924 had a modified Porsche 915 transaxle. This was changed in 1980 (1981 for the 931) to an Audi unit. So, I guess you could say that the 924 is an Audi, if you neglect the fact that there are a lot of Porsche specific parts in it and Audi never planned to sell it.
Of note: your 951 has basically the same transaxle.
Edit- One more thing, your 951 has the SAME chassie as any 924 from VIN 9248201226.
