Aftermarket Radiator or Intercooler?
Well, I've been thinking of adding the first mod to my car and try to keep down my under hood temps (I live in LA and the summer's coming soon!). My question is this: does an aftermarket intercooler help keep down the temps, and if so does it do so better than a radiator? Any suggestions for radiators/IC's? I have already put in a lower temp thermostat.
It's not that I'm constantly overheating, but watching the needle edge closer & closer to that upper line in traffic makes me nervous... TIA

the intercooler wont lower engine temps. Just the charge air temp until combustion. If anything, I would think that upgrading an intercooler might result in raised engine temps (maybe only like a .1 of a degree) but cramming more air into the explosion.
Get a lowre temp thermo stat. or put in a toggle switch for your cooling fans! That's what Im'a gonna do

You don't really want a lower temp thermostat that just prolongs your car from getting to it's proper operating temp. What you want is a lower temp thermal switch to turn the fans on sooner.

Yeah a lower-temp thermostat will flow the exact same amount of water through it as a higher-temp one when they are both fully open at operating temperatures, thus won't help steady-state driving temperatures at all. It'll just make your warm-up take longer.
And it's actually happened to import rice-sters, where they've installed such a large intercooler for 1/4-mile runs, that they will encounter overheating problems just cruising around town because the intercooler slows the air reaching the radiator (and heats it up too).

Yeah, that's pretty much what I've heard about the thermostat, but it was actually the previous owner that put it in. :/ I found an aftermarket radiator at PP but it's only for the Pre-1985.5 modles.
Edit: Crappy UBB Code! Just paste it in.

As someone mentioned a lrger intercooler will not lower engine temps. A larger radiator will lower water temps, not necessarily oil temps. I use a Ron Davis Racing radiator. They build gorgeous radiators. Used by Winston cup cars and other racers. The only problem was that it was so large, the frame needed to be "notched" a little. In 100+F temps, running 20+lbs. boost, motor does not run above normal. RDR is in AZ, possibly Phoenix. Ask for Tim.

in would suggest you get a new radiator a stock unit will work just fine i had the same problem i put in a new stock radiator now it will not climb above half way ever.the lower temp sender is a good idea and make shure you bleed all the air from the system.

86944Turbo, I looked at the Ron Davis web site... NICE! Do you have any photos of your radiator installed and maby what was involved in "notching" the frame? I'm in need of a radiator and I live in Phoenix where the temps are in the triple digits for most of the summer, so cool running is a big concern of mine. Especially with how hot the 951's get.
Thanks,
Dan

Luke,
I would not recommend putting in a switch to operate your fans. A previous owner had installed it on my car and I used it every time except for the one quick trip to the bank and I spaced out turning it on and saw the temp all the way pegged out and the lite was on. Turned on the fan switch real quick and the temp came right down.
Unfortunately when I got to the bank I saw coolant leaking out from beneath my car. The overheating killed my waterpump. Pulling out that switch and making sure the normal system worked properly was the first thing I did after that.
