Re-Geared Mustang GT
A buddy of mine has a 2001 GT with intake, X-pipe(exhaust), and pullies. Hes always braggin that he can take me in the quarter but i always woop on him high end. HOWEVER...he got new gears in his car earlier this week, 4.10: 1. How will these gears affect his car? Will i still have my top end superiority? If not...well..then its time for cam and port polish... <img border="0" alt="[bigbye]" title="" src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" />

Not sure what the stock gears in a GT are but I'm sure 4.10:1 would be lower. A popular first mod on those RAM-AIR Trans AM's is 3.73:1. This gear change lowers the final drive ratio so the car will have more snap at low speeds and off the line. Top end (as mentioned above), however, will really suck as the engine will be reving to **** and his gas mileage will be terrible (even terribler than it was before) - but hey - he might improve his 1/4 time by 0.2 sec You'd still smoke 'em in the 951!

I know what a MAF is...but what is a MAP and what does it do? Also, he claims that his top speed has INCREASED and that he actually accelerates after 4th. I asked him what speed he was at when shifting from 4th to fifth and he replied, " Oh, speedo doesnt go that high." Do we have a BSer on our hands?

I dunno know what the stock gears are in a GT but I'm sure you could find 'em and then you'd know whether he's gone up or down. If he's gone up, then his top speed would increase but accel wouldn't be much better since stangs don't breath well enough at high RPM to have any power. You'll smoke him, I promise - but don't street race do it at the drag strip! The stang drivers around here are notorious bs'ers, making outlandish claims about their K&N air filters taking two seconds off their 1/4 mile times.
I'll let someone else take the MAF/MAP question - I think I know the answer but we'll let the pro's talk

slightly OT but IIRC the turbo S had an option for different gear ratios, I think one of the mags tested it with this option. Top speed was "only" 130 but I bet it got there quickly. At what point does changing the gear ratios become counter productive in terms of turbo spool up?

Uh, don't think so... That one magazine review of the TurboS that had a 3.88 R&P is an oddball exception. I think basically the owner ordered it with the S2 tranny?
The mag said that the car had the same 0-60 as a normal TurboS. But that's because it had to include the 2nd -> 3rd shift because the gearing was lower. Quarter-mile time of 13.9s @101mph is about the same as a normal TurboS. This probably includes a 3rd -> 4th shift as well since the normal Turbo can do this in 3rd gear.

I've had it up to about 140, but it accelerated REALLY, REALLY slow above 130. As far as maxing the speedometer out ... mine registers 150, I am pretty damn sure it will not do it.

As Curly said - He may actually be accelerating in 5th gear now because a Mustang GT WON'T accelerate (at least not very visibly) in 5th gear. It is very much a *****-overdrive gear, and the engine can't get it to go in that gear.

Had a 2002 GT. Since 2000 they came with 3.27's. A common upgrade is 3.73 or 4.10's. Most guys go with the 4.10's so they can get acceleration out of 5th gear. Most of those guys care about dragging, so top speed isnt a priority. I sold mine because it was too slow to justify 24,000 bucks.
