If you do attempt to do it with the rod installed, make sure you secure the rod as well as possible to keep it from moving while drilling.

For the bit to bore the hole, I recommend McMaster part number 2973A38. It's a straight-flute .4531" carbide tipped bit. It leaves a very smooth bore compared to a standard drill bit.
Sorry for resurrecting and old post here... Quick question:

Can you add these bushings to the stock lever to reduce the side-to-side slop? I know this is an old post, so I can't view the pictures from the OP. I have a (fairly) new stock lever with a modified rear linkage and don't mind the throw/height, but would love to "tighten it up" and this bushing add sounds like it may be the ticket...

Yes you can use the bushings on a stock shifter, the fun part is drilling out the shift rod. I did it inside the car with the help of a friend. Bit nerve racking running a high speed drill inside the cockpit!

Is the only944.com shifter shorter than stock, or just add the thrust bearings?

Got it. The aforementioned bushings have a similar role to the bearings in the only944 shifter kit. I am also a little nervous to be boring metal using a hand drill in my interior...

Kind of sucks that I can't go back and edit the first post to fix the links.

The only944.com one looks like a really good deal.. Unfortunately, he's sold out I've contacted him though, and he says he's planning to have some more in the coming months.

For $50 that is a pretty good deal, but if you have an angle grinder just DIY for about $20 in parts. Heck, you can buy an angle grinder at Harbor Freight for $15 that should work for at least as long as you need to do this job. This is a super-simple mod and it is extremely satisfying to get rid of that slop in the shifter.
