Default Holset Turbos

I have been looking at turbochargers and Holset seems to be the one that is best value from what I can tell. To make sure, I have a few questions for the people that run a Holset turbo.

What Holset did you get? Was it used or new? How much did you pay for it(if you dont mind me asking)? Have you rebuilt one, and if so how much/difficult is it to do? When do you have full boost? How was installation? Are you happy with it?

Some people say that choosing a turbo is some sort of mysterious black magic. Am I wrong in assuming that Holset's "standard" sizes are a way of dealing with the confusion some would have on deciding on a particular A/R, inlet/outlet Diameter, ect. for their particular use? I.e. if the hx35 doesnt cut it, then the hx40 will flow more for you?

None of the holsets will bolt right up. You either have do quite a bit of custom work to the crossover and downpipe or utilize a Garrett hotside. The hotsides have to be slightly modified to fit the HX series. The 40 turbine wheel needs the p trim and the hx35 needs the stage 5. The only one that is close to fitting easily using it's own hotside is the hy35. We will be funding out later this year how well it performs.

As far as spoolup- that can be all over the map. I had and hx40 with a .58 t4 ptrim and it hit 15 psi at 3800rpm. It hit very hard and made awesome power. Currently I have an hx35 with a .48 t4 hotside and without my little trick valve hit at 3500. It hits 15psi now at just under 3000. I have logged it and if you look though some old post you could see it.

IMO the are very strong, easily rebuildable.

Oh you also have to grind a bit on the mount and underside of the intake.

15 psi under 3000 is what kind of spool range I would like. I will look back to see your earlier post. I missed out on a hx35 for $150 this weekend. Needed a rebuild, but rebuild kits are cheap. Need to go find some dodge rams at the local pull a part.

try not to be too hung up on the 1 bar rpm target you need to look at dyno charts and go for ride in cars you wont get anywhere near 1 bar@3k with a hx35..
but if you have 7 psi by 3k your car will still realy boogy.
consider borger warner turbos as well they seem to have moved on where KKk stopped they are on the same cars and some rebuild kits suit kkk+bG turbos..
and there is no conplaints from everyone .. they are big in the evo gang..

What kind of price could one expect with a Borg Warner turbo in comparison to a similar sized turbo from a different make/style? Obviously, if Porsche uses them nowadays, they must be good, and expensive...

EDIT: Very nice engine bay your friend has there Olli. And very slick blow-through MAF system.

So what would it take to control one of those VGT Holsets if you bolted it up to an engine it wasn't originally meant for? Could you get a standalone ECU to run it? Or does it take a separate box?

My friend used oem panel withou any difficulties. His 951 is wrecked after an accident he had few years ago. The whole project thread can be read from here:

Just give a call to John. Vitesse system works great with Holsets.

yeh a stand alone ecu genrally has what it takes to contol a vgt... (I'll get to it this year I must)
the borg warners are a similar price to GTBB huffers but boast superior aerodynamics and well there sports turbos the wheels are designed much later than gt's perhaps in just the last few years .
