Default Advice request - Building a 240hp 240tq race motor

I spectacularly blew up my motor at Blackhawk Farms last weekend.
So I need a new race motor for NASA GTS 3. I have a running motor with good compression, from a wrecked '87 951 that has around 84k on the clock. It appears that it has never been out of the car.

With the kind of horsepower and torque I want to run (245 at the rear wheel) I was expecting to freshen the long block, recondition the head, install a cam and use a custom chip. My goal is durability.

I am soliciting advice.

make sure to go with a chip like vitesse that will keep the afr in the safe zone at all boost levels

What was the cause of the previous engine failure?

Jim,
I'm hoping that you don't still need the door handle as I addressed it wrong and it was returned too me. It would appear you have bigger fishes to fry, but I'll still send it out agin if you need it.

Sorry about the misque on this and much more sorry your engine done blowed up.

The power you're looking for is trivial to get.

I'm not sure about your class modification limits though.

But the stock turbo will work fine and is what you want anyway due to the fact that it's a very quick spooling turbo, which spins up at a very low relative rpm. Plus it will easily meet your power requirements. Finally, it's bullet proof.

I'd get a Bursch 2.5" test pipe (with the rest of the exhaust system stock), a Tial wastegate (no modified stock wastegate), an external electronic boost controller, and a MAF/Chip Kit (Vitesse seems to be doing a good job).

That should very easily put you at 245RWHP/245RWTQ at around 1 bar boost. The car should run forever like that.

Alright, Tony. Stop bragging.

I agree with Tony, though. Keep it simple. The more simple the quicker it'll be put back together and the cheaper it'll be.

My '87 951 put 238/248 to the wheels with a completely stock exhaust and just crappy Authority chips. So a stock motor with maybe a MBC and Vitesse Chips should get the job done...

I realize that this is not a lot of power compared to what these motors can make. I am looking for reliablity and consistencey with a great torque curve. I have a great custom chip, full fabspeed exhaust, Lindsay ac delete and a manual rack. I also the transmission to get the power to the ground, GT LSD, cryo treated S2 ring and pinion on a solid mount. A stock motor with my chip is not that far off.

The NASA GTS series is power to weight, it does not matter how you do it. Unfortunately it requires that you keep the same brand motor.

buy 2 standard second hand long motors and spend the rest on more data logging to keep an eye on every thing ..

You don’t need to do much to get to the power limit – focus on longevity!
Lots of oil cooling and a good radiator are important. Bigger intercooler if allowed (not for HP gain but for detonation avoidance).
I would go with a small turbo, even a modded K26/8 will be fine, a Tial wastegate, windage tray and that’s about it for hardware (cam not needed). You will need some engine management tweaking – either standalone or Vitesse stuff if the harness is good.
