Default FS - 1 week only - 320 RWHP 1986 951 - $15,000

All,

I am located in Falls Church, VA and will be leaving for Lagos, Nigeria on May 31st for 2 years. I am planning on putting my 1986 in long term storage in Charlottesville, VA for the duration of my tour. Putting it in storage makes some sense since I can give the car to my kids in a 10 years. However, it is likely that I will be doing multiple tours and that the car could be in storage for a decade or more. In the mean time it will deteriorate and cost me money every month to store it. I am going to make one attempt to sell the car for $15,000 firm. If it doesn't sell, I will send it to storage.

Below is some info about the car.

- 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo
- No factory sunroof or air conditioner
- Recent $16,000 paint and bodywork
- Carbon Fiber fenders and fiber glass hood
- Recaro seats
- 7/10 interior
- Momo steering wheel
- Bilstein Escort Cup Suspension (professionally corner balanced)
- 17 inch allow wheels ($2,500)
- Goodyear Eagle Maximum Performance Summer tires
- 6 speed LSD manual transmission from a 1995 Porsche 968
- 2.5 L motor (5,000 miles since rebuild, 320 RWHP @ 17 PSI on Mustang Dyno)
- Pauter rods
- Knife edged crankshaft
- Stage II head
- Stage II Intercooler
- Aluminum flywheel
- LR Stage III clutch
- Lindsey Racing MAF with wide band O2 sensor and Mafterburner
- Lindsey Racing Intake Manifold
- Lindsey Racing fuel rail and pressure guage
- Lindsey Racking 3 inch exhaust
- Oil catch can
- Oversized fuel pump
- 53 lb Bosch fuel injectors
- 3 inch downpipe
- Garrett GT30R double ball bearing quick spool turbo
- Electronic boost controller
- Custom cold air intake routed through fend well
- High energy ignition
- Additional oil cooler

While off-boost oil consumption is near zero. While driving the car on turbo, oil consumption is about 1 quart per thousand miles. Was inspected by racing mechanic in VA last week and said no issues with oil consumption. They inspected all systems and plugs.

Please PM me if interested. Thx, Bill

Yes, at a traffic light you can see the hot air coming through the scoop. The goal was to keep things cool in city traffic. This was more important before the cold air intake was added.

In theory, the scoop is in a low pressure zone as the air begins to move up the wind sheild. This should create a vaccum that should help pull air through the intercooler.

GLWS. On various boards I've seen you put a huge amount of money and effort into this car. I'm sorry you are in this position. Good luck in Africa.

One option, why not have a guy local to where it is, be a car-tender for you and start it and run it every so often so it doesn't deteriorate?
If the car was in Washington, I'd be willing to do this. I personally hate seeing a car sit and rot when there are ways to preserve the car.

Bill,

On a serious note, if you need a place to store it and have it started/run every now and then, I have a spare garage bay...not a big deal.

Or if you wanted to leave it for sale while you are gone, again no big deal, I could store it for you and show it as necessary to potential customers. Although personally I would rather see you keep it as it is a very nice car with some rare options.

If I can help just let me know, seriously it is no problem or inconvenience. I am in the Hampton Roads area 2 hours south of you now.

Just a thought.

Kudos to you on such a wonderful gesture!
Gotta love this place.

I talked to a local Porsche race shop about allowing the storage facility to run the car for 15 minutes each month. They strongly recommended against that and said that it would do more harm than good. They said that unless the car is regularly taken out and driven at full operating temperature for a reasonable period of time, I would be better off not having it run and just filling it with fuel stabilizer.

Thanks for the offer though, Bill

A very generous offer, thank you. However, I am looking at working in the Africa for 2 years followed by probably 8 years in the Middle East. My daughter is 11 now and I would not give this car to her until she graduated from college. When she goes to college, I will buy her something brand new and safe. The Porsche would be a track car so that she could continue in the Porsche club. I am sure 10 years is more than you would want to sign up for.

At $200/month, this car will cost me $24,000 to store. I am fairly sure it will cost $10,000 after storage to make it drivable again. Most of the parts are Lindsey Racing. Who knows if the LR will still be in business or even if they are, they will probably have moved on to better technology. The car will require a redesign.

If you would like to help sell the car on consignment, I would be open to the idea. Please PM me if interested. The economy will recover and people will again have disposable income for hobbies like this. The car should be worth more money in this environment.

Once again, thank you for your generous offer.

Just as a data point, I used to live and work in the Caribbean and kept my 951 in Spain for months at a time just sitting in an underground parking structure for months at a time with only the battery disconnected and a car cover. One time the car sat for over a year.

This went on for 4 years and every time I came home on vacation, which was once or twice a year at most, I'd just connect the battery, fill up the tires, and drive the wheels off the car. It was stock, though.

GLWS.
