COP came right after OBDII became largely required. It was pretty easy, as you already had misfire detection. Now that we have VCT all over the place, not only do you have CID, but you also have CMP.
Of course, a lot of folks like to make the GM 4-cylinder turbo work, as it is a speed density system, rather than a metered air system. I am sure people have done it, but I know of only one person who took a naturally aspirated PCM, and made it run a turbocharged computer, without some sort of fuel pressure booster system or whatever crude systems people often use do. That guy was a friend of mine while I was at Ford who make an OBD-II computer run his old OBD-I Turbo Coupe.
Having said that, the reason I am attracted to the Ford is because I'm familiar with it, and I still have a bunch of stuff laying around I could use if I were motivated to try to make it work. Right now I'm more concerned about wheels, (track) tires, and a roll cage than engine power.
Glossary of SAE terms:
PCM - Powertrain Control Module
OBD - On Board Diagnostics (think CARB - Californiat Air Resources Board)
CID - Cylider IDentification
CKP - Crank Position
COP - Coil On-Plug
CMP - Cam Position

I thought about using an EEC-V EDIS system from my 96 Turbo Ford Escort that had a SCT Pro Racer package...but that was all flash tuning which sucks. EEC-IV with EDIS would be pretty sweet to use...not to mention easy to find and cheap.
