Default Why didn't Porsche paint the Spindles in certain areas ?

Hi Guys
I pull off the Spindles off my car and found that the area's were these weren't painted got pretty rusted ... I was going to have it blasted but took matters into my own hands ..a scary thing..
I was wondering .. Can I paint some of the areas that are not rubbing up against another area i.e. ( I know not to paint behind the bearing seal ) and where the tie rod connects etc...
Most of the rust occurred very near or around the brake disk protector .. ya know that black shield with holes in it ...
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Kind regards
Ed

rim328 said it exactly, why bother? Porsche didn't see the need. I have seen spindles re-finished off the car, and painted, and it makes some sense, I even have some spares myself painted that way. But with the spindle on the car, why bother. Wire brush them as best you can and spray with WD40, unless you just want to create work for yourself.

ME ! Create work for myself !
It's the story of my life ...
But seriously, Porsche does pay attention to details .... After all they cared enought about rust to have the car body zinc dipped... among many other things that keep the car from rusting ... It just seemed strange... I am sure I am not the only one surprised that they left the metal bare .. or am I
I guess I will paint'em because I hate rust ...
Thanks Richard
Regards
Ed
ps I don't know if you saw my other post on the spindle wear ? Do they look Ok?

Ed,

Porsche did not paint those areas because these cars were mass production vechiles. It would cost a little bit more. You can paint those areas you want.

I'll be on it tomorrow... like a Hobo on a $50.
Pictures will follow ... the main rust area, was where the hub meets the disc guard which in turn meets then meets the spindle The rust really came from the disc protector on the bare metal on the spindle ...
Thanks for your input
I am going to bed ... is getting late... How do I know ? It took me 10 mins to write this
Kind regards
Ed
ps I am just going to paint it black again .. have you heard anyone doing it in other colors

Check 2bridges thread on "it's alive....". He has done a lot of renovation and repainting work including spindles.

Re wear. Spindles don't wear, they break. Overheated wheel bearings can also damage the spindles. The only potential wear area is where the seal contacts the spindle. With grease and dirt it can create an abrasive situation. As long as the grooving is not deep, and its even then its good to go. You can clean the surface (not to get the groove out)with wet and dry 600grit or similar, lubricated with WD40 works best.
