Smile Turbo upgrade for 250 BHP 951

Hi all,

just want to hear your suggestions and not least experiences with upgrading the KKK26/8 turbo.

I am searching a wide powerband and 340 BHP maximum and have already bought Lindsey Quad MAF kit, adj. fuel pressure, LR dual port wastegate & boost enhancer. I will in very near future buy chipset, 3" downpipe and 3" Exhaust Mufflex.

With these rather modest changes what will you expect to be best turbo wise? Stay with 26/8, upgrade to K27/6 or/8, go to Garrett or something completely different?

I would rally value both advice but mostly on-hand experience from people who have been there and done that

Happy Easter every one!

Niels

Best performance for the price is going to be a K27/6 or K27/8.
All out best turbo for that hp would probably be a GT2871R.

340bhp is around 300whp, you may be able to reach that with a standard k26/8. If not, Vitesse stealth turbo upgrade on your k26/8 should get you there.

Thanks guys - I guess the K26/8 modification will be the fastest spooling option (or perhaps the Garrett)?

Keep the k26/8 and get a new compressor and a new turbine put in it. Design has changed a lot since this turbo was built and turbines and compressors that fit in the same place will do a lot more.

It isn't the housing that matter most - it is the CHRA and wheel design... the KKK stuff is ancient in comparison to the new tech wheels. Sid runs a larger turbo in his car then I do, but his spool and transient is still better then mine - simply due to the fact of better design CHRA and wheels.

Thanks for good replies. I think I will stick to the K26/8 and just have it modernised :-)

Hi, if you have a factory 944 Turbo Cabrio, feel free to pm me the details for a registry I'm compiling. Would be the first car recorded from Denmark.

Niels, since you are living quite close, i suggest you to have your original turbo modfied instead of buying something from outside europe. Conatct me with PM, so i can tell what we have had done for our KKK's here in Finland.
btw do you hang around the danish 944 forum ?

It would probably be a good idea to get the bearing assembly replaced and run the stock turbo with the stock components until you learn how to drive it.

With a boost controller, the k26/8 will do enough air to make more than 340 bhp. I ran my stock 26/8 turbo at the track successfully for 3 years.....they're made of good stuff.
